And just so you’re clear, I’ll tell you a story that happened a few weeks ago in my salon.

Jessica, a new client, came to the salon to color her hair. It was time for a dye renewal and she chose a darker color than her usual color.

We chose an ash brown 4.1, which went perfectly with her dark skin and green eyes.

The result was stunning, so stunning that before she left, Jessica asked me to give her a keratin treatment to control frizz and repair some areas that were dry.

I explained to her that  to apply the keratin treatment on her newly dyed hair, we had to wait two weeks.   Because otherwise, her hair would get damaged and the keratin would fade the dye, since the keratin treatment includes heat.

I must admit she wasn’t happy about waiting fifteen days, so she left the salon quite upset.

A few days later, while I was ordering some products, I heard someone enter the salon. At first, I didn’t recognize who it was, but after looking at her for a few minutes, I realized it was Jessica.

Except her hair was reddish looking, with yellow tips and a lot of frizz. I asked her what had happened and she confessed that after leaving my salon, she had gone to another professional to have the keratin treatment done.

I never knew if she had told the other stylist that she had dyed her hair a few days before. What I do know is that I had to do a lot of work to try to fix her hair.

I explained to her that  keratin can lighten the color of freshly colored hair up to two numbers .

So it’s crucial after applying keratin to wait two weeks before coloring the hair. And this is not a whim of mine, or of very picky stylists either.

It has a very logical explanation. And that’s what I’ll talk about next.

Why you can’t do a keratin treatment and color on the same day

In principle, it’s because both treatments are very invasive.

And here’s the key problem: heat. You apply keratin with heat, that is, you seal it in the hair. You pass the straightener through at a very high temperature, so the protein penetrates completely into the hair fiber, repairing it.

Therefore, you should always allow two weeks between keratin and hair color application if you want long-lasting results and care about the health of your hair.

And this brings us to the next question. The order in which you should apply the two processes to your hair.

You should always apply the keratin treatment before coloring your hair

For the keratin treatment to work properly, you have to apply it at a high temperature. Thanks to this temperature, the protein penetrates inside the hair, repairing its structure and filling the empty spaces of broken cuticles.

That’s why, after receiving the keratin treatment, you’ll notice your hair won’t be frizzy.

Keratin will lighten your hair, up to two numbers.

Let’s say you dyed your hair dark brown 4 and then applied the keratin. When you wash your hair after two or three days, and after your hair dries, you’ll notice that the color actually corresponds to a dark blonde 6.

But what’s worse, it won’t be a solid dark blonde 6. Chances are some sections of your hair will be yellowish and others will be orange.

On the other hand,  what will happen if you apply the keratin treatment and then dye your hair on the same day? 

What will happen is that the chemicals in the dye will remove some of the keratin. Therefore, your hair will go frizzy again.

Because you haven’t waited a fortnight for your hair to finish absorbing the keratin.

But the most tragic thing is that you won’t get what you want from any of the treatments, regardless of the order in which you apply the processes on the same day.

Your hair won’t match the color of the dye you applied and you won’t have eliminated frizz and repaired your hair with the keratin either.

And most likely, your hair will be more damaged than before.

That’s why it’s essential you always leave fifteen days between treatments to get the best results from both.

Conclusion

Never apply a keratin treatment and hair color on the same day. My professional advice is that if a salon promises you they can do both treatments on the same day, consult another professional.

Because the only thing you will achieve is ruining your hair. You should always do the keratin treatment first, and after fifteen days, color your hair.

But there’s a difference. Bleaching is a completely different process from dyeing. Bleaching is a chemical process that’s much more aggressive to the hair, as it strips it of its natural and artificial color.

Therefore, much stronger and more aggressive chemicals are used.

So, do you want to use oil before applying hair dye?

You need to understand something first.

How hair dye works if your hair has traces of natural oil in it

While oil is great for your hair, not everything you want to put in your hair is “oil-friendly”.

Oil is an excellent moisturizer and nourisher for your hair because it restores softness and shine.

But do you know how oil works in hair?

It mainly accumulates in the cuticles, which is the outermost part of your hair, and is also the part most damaged by hair straighteners, curlers, or prolonged exposure to the sun.

When you use heat tools, many cuticles break from the high temperatures. And when they break, you’ll get frizz and dryness.

Is your hair dry or frizzy? Is that why you want to dye your hair with oil on it?

It’s not a bad idea. Because natural oils moisturize your hair.

But, you should carefully choose the type of oil you want to use with the dye.

Because oil accumulates in the cuticles.  And when the dye opens them to deposit the color, the oil will also penetrate and won’t allow the color to set evenly. 

So, I repeat.

Depending on the type of oil you choose, you may apply the dye together with the oil on your hair.

You should put the oil in your hair 48 hours before dyeing it

But, beware.

I’m always  talking about a light oil here. 

For example, coconut oil, linseed oil, or rose oil.

If you use any of these oils as a mask to moisturize your hair, and 48 hours have passed since you put it in, you can color your hair without rinsing out the oil first.

Because the oily residue from these oils won’t interfere with the dyeing process.

You can also apply the dye with the oil in your hair if you’ve only used a few drops of light oil to combat frizz.

Now, there are some cases where you definitely can’t dye your hair with oil in it.

Castor, olive, and wheat oils get right to the core of the hair fiber and are more difficult to remove completely in a single rinse. You should wash your hair several times to remove them completely before you color your hair.

Conclusion

If you want to use oil to protect your hair just before dyeing it, it’s important you only use a light oil at least 48 hours before you dye your hair.

But if you’ve put a heavy oil in, you should wait at least two weeks to dye your hair. That way, after several washes, you’ll make sure no oil remains in your hair.

What you should do is  feel the temperature of the water on your scalp , because it’s the thermal difference between your scalp and the water that will tell you if the water temperature is cold enough to rinse out the bleach.

This is the secret we colorists use to regulate the water’s temperature when we rinse out bleach.

When I’m rinsing hair in the hair salon, I always ask the client if the water feels too hot or too cold while I’m holding the shower head over their scalp.

Because the skin on your head is the best thermometer.

Finally, a pro tip:  don’t rinse the bleach mixture out while you’re showering. 

Because if you rinse bleach out while you’re showering, the bleach residue will run down your back and legs and can cause irritation and itchiness.

Also, if your skin is very sensitive, you could even get burns.

Therefore, I recommend that you rinse out bleach in the kitchen or bathroom sink. Then you can let the cold water run only through your hair and remove the bleach.

Conclusion

To remove bleach you should first rinse your hair with cold water for three minutes. Then wash your hair with hot water and shampoo, and finally rinse your hair again with cold water.

That way, you’ll avoid any further damage to your hair or scalp.

In good, professional hands, the damage is always controlled and minor. In inexperienced hands, the damage can be severe.

Anyway, you bleached your hair and it resisted the bleaching process. I imagine you did the strand test before applying the toner.

However, if you didn’t, the least you can do is to do it before toning your hair again.

Let’s imagine the test confirms that your hair would withstand the process and you apply the toner. The next day, you look in the mirror and realize that you still don’t like the color.

So, you think about toning your hair again. Since you can’t wait because you feel the urge to see your hair the way you dreamed, you decide you’re going to tone it again.

No waiting. No thinking about what might happen to your hair.

Toning your hair twice a week can ruin the color

I’m sorry to be so straightforward, but this requires it.

But I’d like to talk about hair toning.

Toner neutralizes unwanted colors to achieve a particular hair tone. It also adds color or revitalizes your mane.

It’s applied with a 20-volume developer to open the cuticles. Then, ammonia fixes it in the core and changes the color.

But coloring doesn’t end the moment you rinse the toner out. The toner’s pigment absorption process is a bit more complicated.

The toner slowly settles into your hair and waits for your core to absorb it. But it doesn’t absorb it immediately.   It can take up to three days for the hair to absorb the toner pigments.  

So, if you toned your hair, and it didn’t even take two days, how can you know for sure that the first toning didn’t work?

You can’t.

That’s why   you should wait at least three days after the first coloring to know what color results in your hair. 

Also, if you tone your hair twice in one week, you’ll saturate it with pigments. The most commonly used toners are violet or blue.

But we still have to get to the tricky part.

If you tone your hair twice in one week, you’ll severely damage it

At this point, you can’t pretend you don’t know what’s going to happen to your hair.

A few moments ago, I explained what happened to your hair when you bleached it. Also, what happened when you toned it for the first time.

Then, it’s time for you to make a conscious decision.

There’s a lot of talk about “mindfulness” these days. Mindful eating, mindful breathing, mindful attention, etc.

Well, from this moment on, you and I are going to be riding the “mindful hair health” trend together.

It means paying full attention to your hair.

It won’t resist a new coloring session.

Then, you have two ways out:

You should wait to tone it again. In the meantime, in a “conscious” way, you should moisturize your hair with masks.

Also, be patient. After three hair washes, take a look at the color.

If you didn’t like the color because it was too bright the first time,   chances are that the color will be paler after three washes.  

Maybe, you don’t even need to tone your hair again.

If you think you need to tone your hair again after those three washes, you won’t be able to do it for another three weeks.

Your hair also needs “conscious” care.

If you don’t like the result after toning your hair, you need to wait for at least three weeks to tone it again. In the meantime, you can use a toning shampoo.

The toning shampoo doesn’t contain ammonia and isn’t applied with a developer. So, it’ll help you tone your hair without having to expose it to a new chemical process.

My final advice is to use the toning shampoo after you have washed your toned hair two or three times.

In my colorist mind,   it’s impossible to separate the words highlights and toner. 

I always apply a toner after doing highlights in my salon. In my opinion, toner is to highlights as a strawberry is to a cake.

Difference 1: The color of toner highlights is completely different from no toner highlights

Many women use highlights to brighten their hair.

We already know that highlights are achieved by bleaching the hair. This process   can bring unwanted undertones to your strands.  

Therein lies the first difference between toned and non-toned highlights.

Those unwanted colors will make your non-toner highlights look unharmonious. It’s as if you had a beautiful piano out of tune.

Even if the pianist is very good and the piano is excellent, the music will sound terrible.

In my opinion, highlights without toner are out of tune.  Your highlights without toner will make the strident colors stand out.

Difference 2: no toner requires less maintenance than highlights with toner

When you apply toner on your highlights, the resulting color will be in harmony with your entire mane and almost customized for your own hair.

However, things aren’t free in life. At least when it comes to coloring.

Therefore, you’ll need to reapply toner to your highlights. That means a visit to the salon and paying for a colorist’s service.

That’s a significant difference in money.

Difference 3: No toner highlights damage the hair less than highlights with toner

That’s right!

Earlier we talked about toner being a type of permanent hair coloring.

You probably already know that permanent coloring is always applied with a hair developer, which is a chemical.

Also, don’t forget that some sections of your hair have been bleached to get the highlights.
During this process, the cuticles were opened to remove the color and lighten your tresses.

This is achieved by using a 30-volume developer and bleaching powder.

So, your bleached strands lost color, but also moisture and nutrients.

The toner is applied with a 20-volume developer, so, you’ll be using 50-volume developer in one day.

Colorists always evaluate the health of the hair before doing highlights. We know the whole process, and we know that the hair will resist both bleaching and toner application.

Sometimes we use some products like OLAPLEX, for example, to prevent irreversible damage.

But if you apply highlights to your hair on your own, disregarding your hair health can lead to disaster.

Otherwise, you’ll damage your hair irreversibly.

My advice is to go to a salon and a professional will give you different alternatives in case you want to apply toner.

Difference 4: highlights with toner are more versatile than no toner ones

How is this possible?

Let’s say you bleached some sections of your hair to get golden highlights.

But when you go back to the salon after three weeks for your highlights makeover, you decide you really want ashy highlights.

That is, you can have copper blonde highlights one month and red, blue or green highlights the next month.

If you don’t tone your highlights, , they’ll always maintain the color resulting from bleaching.

Conclusions

If you don’t want to tone your highlights because you fear damage or haven’t decided on the color, I recommend a toning shampoo.

The toning shampoo is a type of toner, but it doesn’t contain ammonia or isn’t applied with a developer. Therefore, it’s not permanent coloring, and it fades with washes.

You’ll be able to remove the strident color from your highlights until your hair recovers from the damage of bleaching or until you decide on the final color for your highlights.

But beyond the differences between these developers, there’s one thing they have in common.

Any developer, either the 10-vol or 20-vol, is a must for your hair coloring process.  

If you don’t use them, the dye won’t set in your hair evenly. 

That said, let’s start with the differences between the two developers so you can decide which one you need to dye your hair.

Difference 1: The 10-vol will lighten your color while the 20-vol will lift it up to two levels

Both developers open the hair cuticles.

But while  the 20-volume developer has a stronger oxidizing strength, the 10-volume developer can barely open the cuticles. 

Cuticles are small scales that cover the hair fiber to protect the core, which is where the color is located.

When you apply a dye, the developer opens those scales. The higher the volumes of the developer, the higher the cuticle opening power. So, the higher lift you’ll get.

Since the 10-volume developer doesn’t open the cuticles completely, its lightening power is very limited, even non-existent.

Difference 2: The 10-vol is less damaging than the 20-vol because its chemical reaction is milder

In the previous point, we discussed the lightening power of  the 20 volume vs. the 10-vol developers.

It’s related to the second difference because the higher the number, the more damaging it’s for your hair.

The higher the developer volumes, the greater the loss of moisture and nutrients.

Therefore, you should consider your hair health when choosing developer volumes.

Difference 3: The 10-vol is used to touch up with very light or very dark colors while the 20-vol works with any color for the first time or for touch-ups

In case you didn’t know,  hair coloring and color touch up aren’t the same thing. 

Color touch-up is done when the hair is already colored but worn off.

Whereas a coloring job means applying a new color to the hair, even if the hair is previously colored.

The 10-volume developer is used to touch up specific colors in the palette:

The darker dye colors are very persistent and don’t require a high-volume developer to be fixed in the hair.

The hair is already infused with color pigments.

Alternatively, the extra light colors don’t require a strong oxidizing strength because the hair is completely bleached.

Therefore, the color will set evenly even if you use a 10 volume developer.

So,  to touch up very dark or very light hair color, you can use a 10 volume developer. By the way, it’ll also be less damaging to your hair.  

Now, if you’re thinking about changing your hair color, the story changes.

When you apply permanent hair color for the first time to virgin hair or to change your color, the cuticles need to open for the pigmentation to settle in.

And in this case,  you’ll need a 20 volume developer.

The most important differences between the 10-volume developer and the 20-volume developer have to do with their oxidizing strength on the hair.

If your hair is very damaged, and you want to lighten the color or touch up very dark or very light color, go for a 10 volume developer.

Alternatively, to completely change your hair color, you’ll need a 20 volume developer that’ll open the hair cuticles to deposit the new pigments.

And it might even lighten it up to three levels.

Of course, if you color your hair warm blonde, you may not notice the color difference.

During permanent hair color, the cuticles of your hair open up. Some of them break, and some don’t even close again.

That’s why color-treated hair is more fragile and brittle than unprocessed hair.

This process takes approximately 15 days. So, I recommend not flat ironing your freshly-colored hair before that.

Straightening treatments ruin freshly colored hair
