Don’t worry. Almost everything has a solution in the hairdressing world.

The answer is yes: you can go from stripey highlights to a balayage.

Now, let’s analyze what happened to you.

The stripes could be fine or   thick. 

There are two possible solutions. You could  ask for a position at the zoo as a zebra   or ask for an appointment in a beauty salon.

If you go for the latter, I’ll give you a series of tips to keep in mind when you look for the solution to this problem.

2 methods to get rid of stripey highlights with a balayage

Stripey highlights are usually unwanted.   

People usually prefer soft and smooth highlights.

I’ll give you 2 options to correct them with a balayage.

Get a balayage from (almost) the roots

Generally, a balayage starts in your mid-hair instead of very close to the root.

A balayage is  a slow gradient from the darkest roots to a very light shade at the ends  without divisions along the way.

But if you’re trying to disguise stripey highlights, this technique will help you pretend they were done on purpose.

While it may not be the best solution, it’ll help you get through a few months  until the stripes start to fade as your hair grows out  and you can get a real balayage.

Dye your roots with your natural color and imitate the classic balayage

Another solution is to apply a dye of your own shade on the roots and have the balayage from mid-length.

This job will take hours of hairdressing, but it’s the right solution. 

First, your hairdresser will divide and locate as many highlights as possible.

Once this arduous task is completed,  he should pre-pigment those highlights.  Then, dye your hair with your current color.

This can be done with a dye without ammonia so as not to damage the hair. Finally, go for a balayage.

In this case,  you’ll have to softly bleach it because you’ll have traces of the stripey highlights  that were previously bleached.

Therefore,  the result will be a balayage with highlights in two shades of blonde,  which will look beautiful.

But wait! That’s not all.

Another alternative is to apply the dye at the roots without pre-pigmentation and do the balayage.

In this case, the result will be  darker roots but with lighter highlights  of the same shade. Then, the balayage.

It’ll look very nice. However, washes will fade the streaked highlights and they’ll start to show.  

If that happens, you must tone your roots every 15 to 20 days to keep the dark tone in perfect condition.

If your hair is dyed very dark or if it’s fine, forget about a balayage

In both cases, one possibility could be to apply a tone-on-tone of the same hair color  so that the stripey highlights look faded   until your hair grows out.

That way, in 5 to 6 months the highlights will have grown enough to simulate a kind of balayage.

If you want to go to a full blonde, you can start with a dark blonde.

Why should you opt for highlights?

Alternatively, to keep the blend between blonde and your base color,   you should touch up the dye every month   and the highlights every 5 or 6 months.

Paper highlights

Paper highlights also start from the roots.

However,  as your hair grows out, you can choose the thickness, quantity, and location  of the paper highlights.

First of all, I ask you not to be sad.  Everything has a solution . And almost all solutions are simpler than you might think.

First, we need to analyze what ruined your hair. Then  we’ll look for the best and most convenient solution  for your hair.

But don’t lose your cool. Everything has a fix.

My hair was damaged after a balayage

If your hair was already dyed,  balayage may have ruined your hair .

The bleach you used for the balayage should have been extra gentle.

You should have also moisturized your hair beforehand.

Now,  if you had virgin hair , what you think is ruined hair is likely the typical result of bleaching.

In all my years of work, I’ve encountered many clients who had never bleached their hair before. Then when they bleach their hair, they feel their hair has become untamable, dry, and impossible to style.

Solution

The only remedy is to nourish and moisturize your hair.

I asked for a white balayage, but it turned orange.

These show divine hair,  with extra dark colors and white or gray balayage , waist-length hair, models who shake their hair with mind-blowing ease and movement, and so on.

But you know what?

No one, not even the best stylist in the world, can achieve those miracles.

So, bleach doesn’t work miracles if your hair is extra dark.

Can you get a white balayage if you have dark hair?

Yes, of course, you can. But what state will your hair be in afterward?

It was ruined. A professional hairdresser will always tell you  it’s not possible to go white from a dark base  all at once.

But don’t worry.

Don’t get upset if you asked for a white balayage and it went orange. The solution is simple.

But by bleaching 80% to 90% of your hair again, you’ll achieve a buttery tone that will look beautiful.

Your balayage is too dark

Solution

Re-do the balayage, but  this time with bleach. 

The effect will be an extra blonde balayage with some darker highlights. These will be the remains of the previous balayage.

It will look gorgeous.

But if you intend to remove all traces of the balayage,  apply a dye in your natural shade . That’s it.

Your balayage is too light

This can happen when you leave the bleach on for too long. It causes  extra contrast against the rest of your hair. 

While balayage is meant to go gradually from dark roots to light ends, an extremely light shade won’t always look that great.

Solution

A darker dye that darkens the extra light blonde  will be enough to remove the contrast and soften the tone. 

Remember that since you over-bleached your hair,  the new dye will wash out quickly. 

So you’ll have to repeat the balayage quite often until you get to a base color that allows it to last longer.

If you decide to remove the balayage for good, first pre-color your hair to support the dye you’ll apply. Then  apply a dye in the same color as your roots.   You may get a slightly reddish hue , but no trace of the balayage will remain.

Your balayage turned orange

This often happens when doing a balayage on hair that was previously dyed a dark color.

Possible causes of the mistake are using too little bleach, leaving it on for too little time, using low-volume peroxide, etc.

Solution

Do the balayage again,  bleaching again with a low-volume peroxide . You only need to remove the coppery undertone.

Finish by applying a purple toner.

If you decide to remove the balayage, use your base tone. But in this case, it would be advisable to use your base tone with an ash tint  to neutralize the coppery undertone. 

You got a very noticeable line in your balayage

This happens when the hairdresser that does your balayage doesn’t have much experience with the technique.

As a result,  you may be left with an almost straight line in the middle of your hair. 

This is an absolute horror. But don’t worry; it can be fixed.

Solution

Get some light highlights, starting from the top of your head, to hide the mark. On the bleached hair,  dye some dark highlights  to blur the line in your balayage.

On the other hand,  if you prefer to remove the balayage , dye all your hair in your natural color.

The balayage damaged my hair

This may be due to the harshness of the bleach.

If your hair was dyed a dark color or a deep reddish tone before, the hairdresser likely used  a high-volume peroxide  and had to do bleach more than once.

This weakens the hair fiber.

If you had virgin hair, using a harsh bleach may not have been necessary. But  it still may have affected your hair’s quality. 

Solution

You can apply moisturizing masks, flax or argan oil, keratin, hair botox, or hair lifts that  will make your hair look great again. 

Consult your hairdresser for the best option for you.

It looked great, but I just don’t like my balayage

It can happen. You might have had certain expectations about the balayage, but what you got wasn’t what you expected.

Solution

Apply a dye again to all of your hair. For this, you have 2 options:

On the other hand, when a person is going through depression, a severe health problem, or something similar,  their hair becomes almost uncontrollable:  sticky, dull, and flat.

Think for a moment if this might be what’s happening to you.

You’ll find that  when everything calms down in your life, your hair will become more pliable , and your new haircut will look better.

Also, many people cut their hair when they’re going through a crisis. But this may not be the best choice.

Reason 4: External influence: how much are you affected by what other people think?

The influence of others is one of the most powerful factors that  make your face look different after a haircut.

My advice: surround yourself with those who love you and avoid harmful people.

How to go from highlights to balayage

What if the highlights aren’t what you wanted? You can return to the salon and ask your hairdresser to do the balayage.

You will need to be very careful with the bleaching: you should use  bleach powder and mild peroxide  because a significant part of the hair is already bleached.

Therefore,  the balayage will have two tones. Some highlights will be lighter than others,  giving it more depth.

Finally, your hairdresser can  dye some strands of your base color at the roots,  to make the base look darker. And that’s it.

Highlights and balayage: do you know the difference?

The first thing to analyze is the fine line between highlights and balayage.

They are also done with strips or aluminum foil; depending on the location or thickness, they can be differentiated into traditional highlights, babylights, lowlights, etc.

All these techniques start from the root. But  the highlights done with a cap give a more uniform visual effect . You get a more even “blonde” look.

On the other hand, balayage  starts with darker roots  and gradually lightens towards the ends.

Communication problems: Did you explain yourself clearly? Were you misunderstood?

Most of the failures in hairdressing jobs have to do with communication problems with your hairdresser.

One problem is when you don’t know how to express what you want because you’re unsure what each term means. Another is  , the inability of some hairdressers to listen to what you’re asking for . These two issues form a lethal combo.

Now you know what the differences are between each of these terms. You can return to your hairdresser and express all your doubts and concerns.

Of course, I’d like to point out that it’s a different story if your hairdresser doesn’t recommend balayage for you.

It’s possible your hair isn’t in a condition to withstand bleaching or  your hair type isn’t suitable  for the job. Or, possibly, the hairdresser simply doesn’t know how to do it.

Given these potential issues,  seek a second opinion in another salon. 

Perhaps the answer will be the same. Or you may receive other options. A piece of advice from my heart: don’t let your desires blind you.  Evaluate all your choices with a clear head. 

Don’t let yourself be carried away by a whim.

Although everything has a solution, unpleasant results can leave traumas and fears you could have avoided.
