What color cancels out blue hair? 2 ways to do it, step-by-step

opposite colors are complementary

  • Orange is the color that cancels out blue according to the color wheel, which is a more than effective tool in colorimetry.
  • You can choose to use an orange toner if you are more experienced in coloring, or, otherwise, a dye with copper reflections.
  • If you choose the color, you must take into account the intensity of blue you have in your hair. Today, I’ll show you exactly what color number you should use.

Since fashion decided that the colors of the rainbow should be transferred from the skies to the hair, the hair world acquired a new dimension.

Within those colors, blue, from the lightest to the darkest, is one of the most chosen tones, both by teenagers and more mature women.

Blue hair, from electric blue to the pale blue, is bold, vibrant, full of energy and life.

However, when you get tired of blue hair, the world can suddenly become black and white.

What alternatives do you have to cancel out that blue which, until yesterday, looked like your favorite color?

Sure, you can use a clarifying shampoo, but it’s too strong a product, which can leave your hair on the verge of total dehydration.

Or, you can bleach your hair. Of course this is a very aggressive chemical process, which only very healthy hair can withstand.

So, what can you do to cancel out the blue in your hair, with as little damage as possible?

Use a toner or a dye. The color of either option has to be orange or copper.

Orange cancels out blue because it is its complementary opposite in the color wheel. It means that blue cancels out orange and vice versa.

What will be the result?

You will get a brown or chestnut tone, which is a universal color and the basis for any type of color.

Do you want to cancel out the blue tone of your hair to get that wonderful brown color? Then, stay with me, because I will tell you:

How to cancel out blue hair with toner

As I told you at the beginning, you can use an orange toner to remove the blue color from your hair. But, there is always a “but”. I only advise you this option if you have any experience in coloring.

Toner is a professional tool, which requires some knowledge of colorimetry and being very strict when applying and exposing the product on the hair.

If you leave the toner on any longer than necessary, you risk ending up with too much orange on your hair. That’s why it’s vital that you have some experience with these products.

Toner is a widely used tool in beauty salons, which is used to cancel out tones after bleaching or applying a dye. In this case, it will serve to cancel out the blue in your hair.

What do you need?

  • Orange Toner
  • 20 volume developer
  • Gloves

Instructions:

  • Comb your blue hair with a parting in the middle. In a plastic container, mix the toner and the 20 volume developer bottle until they are completely integrated.
  • Once you put on the gloves, start applying the mixture on ends and lengths, leaving the roots and growth for the end.
  • Leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes, controlling the color your hair takes on, as the toner acts quickly
  • After this time, rinse with plenty of warm water and apply conditioner to make your hair soft and shiny.

After using the orange toner on your hair, there will be no trace of blue and you will look a beautiful shade of brown.

What can you do to keep that chestnut tree?

You have two possibilities:

  • Renew the toner every 3 weeks following the same steps as above.
  • Apply a shade of brown dye. You can choose between a brown 4 or a light brown 5, to keep your new color without problems.

If your knowledge does not allow you to choose the toner, the safest thing to do is to cancel out the blue with a dye with coppery highlights. Which one should you choose?

That’s what I’ll tell you next.

How to cancel out blue with orange dye

The first thing you should do is to know the exact shade of your blue:

  • If your blue is dark, you can choose darker orange colors such as: 4.43 golden coppery brown and 5.43 light golden coppery brown.
  • If your blue is medium, you can choose medium orange colors such as: 6.43 dark blonde coppery gold and 7.43 blonde coppery gold.
  • If your blue is light, you can choose light orange colors like: 8.43 light blond golden copper and 9.43 very light blond golden copper.

With this guide, you will be able to choose the ideal shade to cancel out your blue without problems.

What shade will you get after applying the dye you choose? Well, the resulting shade will depend on the level of the color.

  • If it’s dark blue, it’ll be dark brown.
  • If it’s medium blue, it’ll be brown.
  • If it’s light blue, it’ll be light brown/dark blonde.

Once you have the dye, it´s time to use it.

  • Step 1

Comb your hair with a middle-part so that it is easier to apply the dye.

  • Step 2

With the gloves on, mix the entire dye bottle with the developer cream that is included in the dye box, until a homogeneous consistency is achieved.

  • Step 3

Begin applying the coloring mixture from root to tip, making sure to cover the entire surface of the hair, and leave it on for 30 to 40 minutes.

  • Step 4

After the exposure time, rinse your hair with plenty of warm water, taking advantage of the post-color treatment, which is included in most dyes.

To maintain your new color, you only have to choose the brown or golden blonde you like best and apply it every 4 or 5 weeks.

Conclusions

If you want to remove that blue tone from your hair, all you have to do is to choose an orange toner or a dye with copper highlights, which will leave your hair in the range of brown or dark blondes, depending on your shade of blue.

In the event that you choose to cancel out the blue with a dye: if you have dark blue hair, choose a 4.43 or 5.43 dye. If your hair is medium blue, your options are 6.43 and 7.43. And if your hair is light blue, choose a shade 8.43 or 9.43.

Say goodbye to blue and welcome your new color.
