Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve dyed my hair light brown with permanent dye for years.<\/p>\n<p>My sister, on the other hand, uses semi-permanent dye, because she doesn\u2019t want to use <a href=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/en\/organic-hair-dyes-vegetable-without-peroxide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">products with ammonia or peroxide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And, since I have short hair, I always use half of the product to dye my hair and <a href=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/en\/what-to-do-with-leftover-hair-dye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">save the other half<\/a> for the next month.<\/p>\n<p>But as I was dying my hair two months ago, I discovered that I didn&#8217;t have enough product. Maybe I used a bit more than normal the month before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But I knew my sister had a semi-permanent dye hidden in the bathroom vanity.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the color, and could have jumped for joy. It was a chestnut brown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#ffb5e8;color:#000000\">&nbsp;So, I decided to mix the permanent dye I already had with some of the semi-permanent dye.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>Of course, I could have bought more of the permanent hair dye, but I was in a rush to get ready for a party, and I was leaving in just a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>So, throwing caution to the wind, I mixed the two dyes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At first, everything seemed to go well.\u00a0 The color looked the same as it always did, and I went to my party.<\/p>\n<p>But after four shampoos my hair was anything but the even brown I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#ffb5e8;color:#000000\">&nbsp;It was brown, but a mix of light and dark brown.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>This can look great if you have some strands lightened on purpose, like a balayage, but when the light strands aren&#8217;t placed correctly the difference in color can look like a mess.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And the only explanation I could think of was that I had mixed the two types of dye. When I told my sister what happened, she was practically rolling on the floor laughing.<\/p>\n<p>After her laughter faded, she got serious and explained why exactly mixing permanent and semi-permanent dye is a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, if you don&#8217;t want to end up with zebra hair like mine, keep reading, because here we&#8217;ll explain why these two products can create a catastrophic combination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why you should not mix permanent and semi-permanent dyes<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16741\" src=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mezcla-de-peroxido-y-aclarante.jpg\" alt=\"whitening agent\" width=\"510\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mezcla-de-peroxido-y-aclarante.jpg 510w, https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mezcla-de-peroxido-y-aclarante-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mezcla-de-peroxido-y-aclarante-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Permanent and semi-permanent hair dye is like oil and water.<\/p>\n<p>Their chemical compositions is so different that it&#8217;s almost impossible to mix them evenly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\">\n<ul>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Semi-permanent dyes are more gentle, don&#8217;t contain ammonia and don&#8217;t need to be <a href=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/en\/can-i-use-conditioner-instead-of-developer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mixed with developer.<\/a> <\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It deposits the color on the surface of the hair, almost like adding a coating on the hair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\">\n<ul>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Unlike permanent dye, semi-permanent doesn&#8217;t enter the hair shaft, or the cortex, and can&#8217;t lighten your hair, cover grays, or permanently change your hair color.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each product was designed for a different purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does a semi-permanent dye do?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The answer is simple.<\/p>\n<p>Semi-permanent dyes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Deposit color on blond or lightened hair<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Conceal, but don't completely cover, grey hair.<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Refresh faded hair color.<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Tone grey or copper-colored highlight and blend them with the base hair color.<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"sui sui-check-square-o\" style=\"color:#800080\"><\/i> Add brightness and shine to dull or damaged hair. <\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since this type of dye only affects the outer surface of your hair, it only lasts between four and ten shampoos (depending on the health and porosity of your hair) before it starts to fade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What about permanent dyes?<\/h2>\n<p>They are completely different from semi-permanent colors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Permanent hair dye does exactly what the name suggests: permanently change the color of your hair.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because of its chemical formula, and the developer that it's mixed with, permanent hair dye open the hair cuticle and deposits the hair dye into the internal part of the hair structure. The cuticle then closes again, sealing the pigment inside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Not only that, but permanent dye doesn't fade, so you can see a difference between dyed hair and new growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Permanent dyes can lighten or darken hair, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allure.com\/story\/three-easy-ways-to-cover-gray-hair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">completely cover grey hair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there's one more important difference between these two products.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-list milista\" style=\"margin-left:0px\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Permanent hair dye changes the hair's structure, so the color doesn't fade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Basically, permanent dye opens the hair cuticle before depositing the pigment, and semi-permanent dye doesn't.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#ffb5e8;color:#000000\">&nbsp;Permanent and semi-permanent dyes have incompatible chemical properties, so they don't mix well, just like oil and water. &nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>While you can mix them, you're not going to get the results you want.<\/p>\n<p>Which is what happened to me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because I mixed the two kinds of dye, the permanent dye and developer affected parts of my hair, but not all of it.<\/p>\n<p>The result?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/botoxcapilar.org\/en\/how-to-match-the-color-of-your-dyed-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">color faded unevenly<\/a>, so some stands were a completely different color after a few shampoos.<\/p>\n<p>How did I fix it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>To fix my botched dye job, I ran to the pharmacy and bought a permanent dye, which I used to cover the lighter strands.<\/p>\n<p>The problem?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since mixing the two dyes didn't work, I had to re-dye my hair in under two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Which left my hair feeling rather dry.
