Having poofy hair is more irritating than the sound of the alarm clock in the morning.
The other day a girl commented to me that she had spent hundreds of dollars on products and treatments to get rid of the poofiness in her hair but none of them had worked.
A fortune thrown away in the trash.
Her hair is still poofy and with just as much frizz as before.
But you don’t have to spend a fortune because today, I’m going to tell you exactly how to get rid of the poofiness from your hair.

Which is the best treatment for poofy hair? There aren’t magical solutions
If you have poofy hair, you will have to try and try different ideas and combinations of products until you find the one that best adapts to the needs of your hair.
You have to understand that there aren’t two people’s hair that are completely the same. Every hair is different and it is exposed to different factors.
It’s not the same hair that lives in a warm climate as hair that lives in a cold climate. Fine hair is not the same as thick hair. Dyed hair is not the same as hair that isn’t dyed.
And we could go on like that for a week.
The idea is that the best treatment for poofy hair varies from one person to another. What works for you may not work for your friend.
That’s why I’m going to tell you now about some tips or clues for how to start experimenting with your own hair.
11 tips and home remedies to free yourself from poofy hair
1- Don’t brush your hair when it is dry
How should you brush you hair so that it isn’t poofy?
If you usually comb your hair when it is dry, it is possible that it is one of the reasons that your hair is poofy.
The only thing that you achieve by brushing your hair when it is dry, is making it even more poofy. Also, dry hair doesn’t have elasticity which makes the hair break easily.
Don’t brush your hair when it’s very wet.
It’s also not a good idea to brush your hair when you just finish washing it and it’s dripping with water. It’s best to get rid of the excess moisture and then after, brush your hair with your fingers.
Yes, with your beautiful and delicate fingers.
At the same time that you pass your fingers through your hair, you can apply combing cream.
What is combing cream?
That’s the second tip.
2- Using combing cream
Combing creams are used among other things to brush your hair in a way that when it dries, it doesn’t become poofy or cause frizz.
Let’s think of combing cream like an assistant for brushing your hair.
These creams are easy to find and believe me that the difference between using them and not using them is enormous.
What is the best combing cream?
Here, you’ll have to test it out, like I explained earlier.
There are no two heads of hair that are completely the same, so it is impossible to recommend a universal cream for everyone.
The cream that works for one person, may not work for another. That’s why you have to try them out until you find a cream that is adapted to the needs of your own hair.
Preferably, look for combing creams without alcohol.
A combing cream that I like a lot is DevaCurl. I like it because it doesn’t have sulfates, silicones, or parabens. Whenever people ask me to recommend a combing cream, I choose this one.
Another cream that works very well is UniqOne.
The big advantage to this cream is that it is multi-use.
It works to help comb and detangle, as well as protects the hair from the heat of flat irons and hair dryers.
Ah, and another thing. You will save a lot of money because instead of buying a ton of different products for your hair, you’ll only have this cream and that will be enough.
3- Don’t use the hair dryer or flat iron
Chocolate cakes are very delicious. But if you want to lose weight, you can’t eat chocolate cake.
In the same way, if you want to get rid of the poofiness in your hair, you can’t use the hair dryer or flat iron every day.
The hair dryer as much as the flat iron generate a vicious cycle where the more you use them, the poofier your hair gets.
What is the solution?
Try to stop using these heat tools. The less you use them, the better.
If you can’t resist your desire to use the flat iron, at least protect your hair with a heat protector.
Many people, when I recommend this ask me Carina, how to I dry my hair without a hair dryer?
4- How to dry your hair
There are two ways to dry your hair so that it doesn’t get poofy or so that it is less poofy.
The first option is to air dry your hair. But of course, that takes some time. And today, people live their lives running from here to there. From home to work. From work to studying. From studying to the gym so that you can’t notice the “excesses” from the weekend.
And that’s how we live our lives, without time to dedicate to our forgotten hair. So, that’s how frizz is generated. And sponginess.
So, I’m going to propose a middle option for drying your hair. As we said above, the best would be to stop using your hair dryer. But if you can’t stop using it, you can use it with cold air.
Hot hair from the hair dryer opens the cuticle and this way it makes it easier for the hair to break.
Remember the ideal alternative is to stop using the flat iron. The second best alternative is to us an iron with cold hair.
Better yet is to use the dryer just on the upper parts of your hair and let the ends air dry. Remember that the ends are the most delicate zones of your hair. They break and split easily. That’s why it is best not to dry your ends.
5- Avoid products with alcohol
Many of the products that you use every day in your hair contain alcohol.
If you don’t believe me, you can check the products that you use in your hair and surely you will see that they have some percentage of alcohol.
Products with alcohol damage the hair and absorb its moisture. The result is that hair is dry and poofy. To avoid this, the best thing to do is use products without alcohol.
You will find that products without alcohol are more expensive, but believe me, you will notice the difference after the first use.
6- Protect your hair from the sun
If you are going to sunbathe, you are definitely going to use sunscreen.
Now, let me ask you a question.
Why do you protect your skin when you sunbathe, but not your hair?
Most people think that hair doesn’t get damaged like your skin. When you skin is exposed to sun more than it should be, it turns red. It’s not fun. Nor is it healthy.
Your hair also gets damaged by the sun.
What happens is the damage isn’t as visible as what occurs on your skin. On your skin, you can see the damage almost instantly. Or a few hours after being exposed to the sun. In your hair, the damage remains hidden. It becomes visible a while after.
The hidden damage caused by sun exposure makes the hair poofy. The solution is very simple.
If you are going to be exposed to the sun, you need to care for your hair just as you care for your skin.
There are many options for caring for your hair in the sun. You can use a hat, a handkerchief, or whatever looks best with your look. Or you can use a sunscreen for your hair.
Yes, there are sunscreens specifically designed for hair that comes in a spray.
Humid or tropical climates also don’t help a lot so that your hair isn’t spongy.
If you live in a climate that like there isn’t much you can do in that respect. You can’t change the climate unless you move and live in another city. And I don’t think that it’s in your plans to move to a city just because your hair is spongy.
If you live in a city with humid or tropical climate, it’s best to apply one of the other pieces of advice.
7- Use natural oils
Natural oils are your hair’s best friend.
Remember when you met your best friend?
Well, today is a very important day for your hair because your hair is going to meet its new best friend.
From now on, natural oils are going to be your hair’s best friend.
Which natural oil should you choose?
There are many natural oils, and luckily, today they are very easy to get. You have coconut oil, almond oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and the classic olive oil. And many others. These oils can be found in any botanical store or naturalist store.
Any of these natural oils is going to be very helpful for getting rid of the poofiness in your hair.
Just as you smear butter in the pan, you have to smear the oil on your hair. Smear the oil of your choice over your hair from the roots to the ends.
When your whole head is covered with the oil, cover it with a shower cap. This is to keep the hair moist so that the oil can better penetrate your hair.
Cualquiera de estos aceites naturales va a ser de mucha ayuda para quitar lo esponjado de tu cabello.
If you don’t have a shower cap, you can use a plastic grocery bag. The important thing is to generate a moist, empty environment.
Let it sit for 45 minutes to an hour and then wash your hair as you regularly do.
TIP: if the roots of your hair tend to get greasy, avoid putting the oil on your roots. Start applying the oil about 10 cm from the skin of your head.
This natural oil treatment for poofy hair can be repeated 3 times a week at first. Then reduce the frequency according to how the poofiness of your hair reduces.
8- How often is it best to wash your hair?
95% of people that I know wash their hair daily.
And you? How often do you wash your hair?
Maybe you don’t know this but washing your hair every day is a mistake. And I’m almost sure that it is one of the causes for your spongy hair.
The chemicals that these washing products have get rid of the natural oils in your hair. They get rid of the moisture. That’s why the more you wash your hair, the poofier it will be.
I recommend that you wash your hair as little as possible. For example, 3 times a week would be enough. If you don’t have a very greasy scalp, maybe washing your hair once a week is enough. It’s something that you have to experiment with because everybody’s hair behaves differently.
9- The perfect shampoo for poofy hair
And now, I’m going to give you a very easy recipe to make in order to replace the shampoos that you are using right now.
This recipe that I’m going to give you, you can make at home. All you need are two things. A natural oil, which can be the same as before, and a conditioner.
To prepare this recipe, all you need to do is mix 4 or 5 tablespoons of the natural oil with your conditioner.
Very easy, right?
Just make sure you don’t overdo the oil because you could end up with a mixture that is too greasy. With 4 or 5 tablespoons, it’s enough.
This shampoo is much more moisturizing than any other shampoo that you could buy at the supermarket.
This mixture of conditioner and oil can also be used as a mask. You apply it at night before going to sleep and you let it sit all night long. If you don’t want to wake up with your pillowcase all stained, cover your hair with a shower cap.
10- Conditioner with glycerin
If even after doing everything that I explained to you up until now, you still have poofy hair, there is still one more trick up my sleeve.
Put a few drops of liquid glycerin in the conditioner. This will give a lot of moisture to your hair.
11- Additional tip
Drink a lot of liquids.
Preferably, water.
What does water have to do with hair?
It has a lot to do with it. Much more than you think.
Drinking a lot of liquids is just as important for the health of your skin as it is for the health of your hair.
In general, specialists recommend drinking at least 2 liters of water daily.
Conclusion and one very important thing
Before you go off and try these things, my dear friend, I have something to tell you.
The keyword here is caution.
Don’t even think of starting to do all of these things at the same time because you could end up with hair as greasy as pizza that is sold at the corner of my house. And you don’t want that.
You want to get rid of the poofiness of your hair. You don’t want to turn into a waterfall of grease.
That’s why you have to go little by little experimenting with things like I explained above. If, for example, you start to use natural oils, don’t put the oil in your shampoo as well. If you are going to use oil, don’t put glycerin in your conditioner. You have to incorporate these things one at a time.
And now, I would like to know about you.
