What does pink hair fade to? How long does pink dye last?

looks faded and sloppy

Do you have pink hair that’s colored with permanent or semi-permanent dye?

  • If your hair is permanently colored pink when the color fades your hair will look very pale pink.
.

  • If you have semi-permanently dyed hair when the color fades your hair will look the same as the color you had before applying the pink dye.
  • You may have had to bleach your hair to yellow to get to pink. That will be the color your hair will have when pink fades completely.

You have several options for when your pink hair color fades:

  • Renew your pink dye
  • Renew your dye with another shade of pink
  • Change your hair color completely

It will depend on the style and look you’re looking for.

What you should always keep in mind is the type of dye you are using.

If you have used a semi-permanent dye, you can apply a permanent dye over it.

What you can’t do, however, is apply a semi-permanent dye to hair colored with permanent dye. If you do, your color won’t lock into cuticles and you won’t notice the difference.

I told you what color your hair will look pink when it fades.

And I told you what options you’ll have when it’s time to renew the color.

Buckle up and let’s start our journey into the fascinating world of pink hair.

What color does faded pink hair look like?

two colors

Imagine that you are a famous painter who performs exhibitions in the best galleries in the world and you have decided that your next work will be pink. Yes, pink.

Then, you make pure pink on your palette, and, little by little, you start adding water to the color.

The more water you add, the more the color will be diluted. However, of course, you know this very well because you are a famous painter.

What many women who dye their hair pink don’t know is that the same thing that happens to pink on the palette happens to pink hair.

As you wash your hair, shampoo and conditioner remove the dye and the color fades.

  • If you applied a hot or bubblegum pink, it will turn pastel pink when it fades.
  • If you applied a rose, it will turn pale pink when it fades.
  • If you applied a pastel pink: when it fades, it will be a vintage pink or just your base color with only a pink reflection.

As you can see, the color that comes out when pink fades depends on the type of pink you applied.

You know well that pink is the mixture of red and white, so the darker the pink the redder it will be.

Now, if you’ve applied a fuchsia shade, the story changes.

While most women believe that fuchsia is a stronger pink, let me tell you that you are wrong.

Fuchsia is in the range of violets and purples.

This means that if your hair was dyed fuchsia when it fades it will most likely shade into purple or blue tones.

Of course, this should not make you change your decision. You just need to know so you don’t get scared in case you see blue highlights in your hair.

How long does pink hair dye last? How long does it take to start fading?

semipermanent hair color

As I mentioned at the beginning, the duration of the color pink does not depend on the pigment itself. It depends on the type of dye you used.

If you used semi-permanent hair color:

Semi-permanent dye is applied to bleached hair and no peroxide or ammonia is used.

This is why it lasts approximately 6 to 8 washes.

After this time, pink color will have faded completely and it will be time for color renewal or change.

As this dye does not contain peroxide or ammonia, it does not damage hair and you can change colors as many times as you wish.

It is very easy to apply.

  • Wet your hair
  • Apply the semi-permanent dye to the entire surface
  • Leave it on for 40 minutes
  • Rinse with warm water

The semi-permanent dye has a gel-like texture that is very simple to handle and will not stain your hands or clothes.

There are many shades of pink to choose, from bubblegum pink, deep pink to pale pink, pastel pink to fluorescent pink.

If you used permanent hair color:

The dye is permanent if it is applied with peroxide and if it contains small amounts of ammonia.

Thanks to that, it may last 2 to 3 weeks approximately.

After that, you will begin to notice that your pink color starts fading and you will have to renew it.

Although permanent dye is applied with peroxide, it does not have as much volume as conventional shades.

It is applied with 9 or 10-volume peroxide, which does not cause much damage to the hair.

Its application is like any other hair color:

  • Having your hair dry, prepare the mixture of peroxide and dye
  • Apply the mixture to the entire surface of your head
  • Leave the mixture to work for 40 minutes
  • Rinse with plenty of warm water

What color can I dye my hair when pink fades?

dye and shampoo mix

Here are several options to choose from, as I told you at the beginning of this article.

You can decide between the following:

  • Renew your pink dye
  • Renew your dye for another shade of pink
  • Change your hair color completely

Renew your pink dye:

This is the easiest option.

Just go to the hairdresser’s or pharmacy and  buy the same pink and the same type of dye you applied last time and renew your color. It’s that simple.

You apply it to the entire surface of your hair and, within minutes, you will again have that pink you like so much.

Renew your color for another shade of pink:

This option is a little more complicated.

Do you know why?

It’s very simple. It depends on the shade of pink you want to apply.

If you start with a light pink shade and want to apply a darker one, there will be no problem.

However, if you want to apply a light pink shade over a darker shade of pink, it gets slightly more complicated.

Even though the basic pink will be almost completely gone, there may still be pigments that will make the new shade of pink not lock correctly.

This would cause your color to be darker in some areas and lighter in others.

My advice as a colorist is to wash your hair with anti-dandruff shampoo.

Weird, isn’t it?

Anti-dandruff shampoo works very well to remove dye without bleaching or applying other chemicals that damage hair.

You’ll see that after the second or third wash with anti-dandruff shampoo, all traces of pink will be gone.

Once this happens, you are ready to apply your new shade of pink.

Completely change your hair color

This is the last option and the one you should think about the most before doing.

If you decide to change the color, you must be very sure.  Think that, if you apply a shade such as brown, you won’t be able to go back to pink very easily.

You can apply any color you want.

Always remember that it should be a darker shade than the pink you have as a base.

If you want to apply lighter shades, you must remove all pink before applying the new color

Now, that is always referring to the same type of dye.

If you want to change the type of dye remember that:

  • SEMI-PERMANENT DYE CAN BE COVERED WITH PERMANENT DYE
  • PERMANENT DYE CANNOT BE COVERED WITH SEMI-PERMANENT DYE

Applying permanent dye will cover any traces of semi-permanent dye in your hair.

My advice is that, if you’re determined to radically change your color, you apply permanent dye to your favorite color.

You can apply lighter or darker colors since the permanent dye completely covers the trail of other types of dyes.
