The root touch-up spray wasn’t a good long-term solution, especially considering my hair fell past my shoulders, and some of the grey hairs were very long.

 

The final straw was when I ran into an acquaintance of mine at the store. I say “acquaintance”… this girl is quite a piece of work. She’s a drama queen who spreads negativity as her life depends on it.

So there I was, checking out all the hair dyes, when I heard her shrill voice behind me.

 

I froze, knowing that this girl always makes me feel like I need an appointment with my therapist. But, because -unlike some people- I’m not rude, I turned around to say hello. Of course, she immediately interrupted me.

And the first thing out of her mouth was, “wow, all that grey hair makes you look ten years older! You really should do something about that.”

 

Thankfully my phone rang, and I had to excuse myself to take a call from my daughter. Otherwise, there might have been one less drama queen in the world by the time that conversation was over.

As much as I hated to admit it, she was right. Instead of looking like highlights, the grey hairs made me look older.

 

The time had come to dye them. The only issue was, I didn’t have much experience dying grey hair. Which dye should I use?

I decided to cover my grey hair with a blond color similar to the grey and make them less noticeable as they grow out.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a dye specifically created for gray hair, but the permanent dye is an excellent option.

 

Did you know grey hairs don’t have melanin, which is your hair’s natural pigment? Over time, your hair starts to lose melanin. And that’s when everyone’s nightmare begins: the grey hair appears.

What I didn’t know is that there’s a huge variety of hair dyes to choose from:

 

I decided to give the tone-on-tone dye a try first.

I was pretty disappointed.

 Although this type of dye is straightforward to apply, my grey hairs were back within two weeks. And I had to dye them yet again. Which led me to my hair being much drier, with split ends. 

Tone-on-tone dye uses a 9 volume developer, and therefore, does not last very long.

 

Which, for me, meant that I would have to dye my hair every two weeks -twice a month- to keep my grey hair covered.

This means my hair would be getting the damage equivalent of an 18 volume developer each month.

I didn’t think it was worth the effort, especially considering how it damaged my hair.

 

 After considering my options, I decided to use a permanent dye. Even though it uses a 20 volume developer, it lasts much longer, up to five weeks. And I’ve been able to go even longer – to a month and a half- without needing a touch-up.

Now that you know that permanent dye is the best option for covering grey hair, let’s talk about choosing a color. What color you use is very important. Choose the wrong color, and your grey hairs might become more noticeable than before.

The right color also makes your natural grey hair less noticeable as the dye fades.

When choosing a shade of blond, take a look at the current color of your greys.

 

Those shades should cover your greys perfectly.

 

Now, if you’re looking to create a platinum blond look, you might choose an 11.1 or 12.1. And if you have golden locks, you might choose an 11.3 or 12.3.

 These shades are an extra light blond, and look great over grey hair. 

 

Another plus of using a blond dye to cover grey is that you don’t always need to dye all your hair. Sometimes all you need is to touch up the roots.

This prevents the rest of your hair from being damaged by the ammonia in the hair dye.

But what if you’re not a natural blond… can you still use a blond shade to make grey roots less noticeable?

 

Unfortunately, if you have a very dark base color, the answer is no. You’ll need to bleach your hair before applying a blond dye. And according to specialists, the best way to bleach your hair with as little damage as possible is in stages.

But if your hair is more of a medium brown, you might only need to bleach it once to get it to the desired blond shade.

 

How to care for your hair after you dye it

When I started dying my greys, I did notice that it damaged my hair somewhat.

It had begun to feel very dry, which isn’t surprising because, after all, permanent hair dye contains chemicals such as peroxide and ammonia.

 

 

• Another important feature of your hair care routine is the shampoo you use. The right shampoo can help the hair dye last as long as possible.

Although no brands have created shampoo specifically for grey hair, some shampoos contain pigments that help your blond last as long as possible, enabling you to go longer in between dye treatments.

It's essential to choose the right type of shampoo for your hair.  There are shampoos for ash blond, golden blond, platinum, and grey.

 

Now, I feel great about my reflection in the mirror. Now I can hide my grey hair with a permanent dye and care for my hair to stay healthy, and the color lasts as long as possible.
