Scabs on Scalp After Hair Dye: 3 Possible Causes and ways to start healing your scalp today

should apply dye

Do you have scabs on your scalp after dying your hair? Possibly, for one of these three reasons.

  • Contact dermatitis due to allergy to one of the chemical components of the hair dye.

Solution: although dermatitis may go away on its own, it may worsen and become more serious. Use over-the-counter antihistamine creams to calm the skin. Also, ask a dermatologist.

  • Seborrheic dermatitis can be triggered by a reaction to the hair dye.

Solution: use over-the-counter creams and wash with shampoos containing salicylic acid, zinc, or selenium sulfide. Also, use shampoos that help regulate excess oil and dandruff.

  • The last possible reason for scabs on your scalp is chemical burn due to the hair dye.

Solution: chemical burn is a delicate situation. Don’t take it lightly. Apply aloe vera or some soothing gel. It’s much better if it’s cool from the fridge.

Of course, you should visit a dermatologist in any of these three situations. .

Have you dyed your hair and got scabs on your scalp?

Scalp sores are quite uncomfortable.

They may or may not itch. If they do, try not to scratch them, let alone play with them.

Don’t pick the scabs off your head, as the bacteria under your nails could worsen the situation by creating an infection. .

Comb and brush your hair carefully. Both the teeth of the comb and the bristles of the brush could worsen the situation. Furthermore,  , you should only brush your hair with your fingers until your scalp is fully healed  .

Don’t color your hair again until your scalp is fully healed.

Scabbing can happen for any number of reasons. I’m not going to talk in medical terms because I’m a hairdresser.

However, I want to tell you about the three main causes and solutions to why you can get scabs on your head that have to do with coloring your hair.

Contact dermatitis due to allergy to one of the hair dye chemical components

fixing the color

Most likely, your skin reacted because you are allergic to one of the hair dye components.

PPD, or paraphenylenediamine, is one of the most allergy-causing components. The skin becomes inflamed, reddened, injured, and then scabs appear. Did you know that all hair dyes undergo an allergy test?

If you didn’t, now you know about it for the future.

Try to do it before coloring again. Apply a small amount of the product on your forearm, or behind the back of your neck, and wait 48 hours.  If you’re allergic to the hair dye, your skin reacts. You’ll notice it by the itching, the color of your skin, or the inflammation. .

Of course, if your skin reacts adversely, you shouldn’t color your hair.

What should you do?

In addition to staying away from permanent hair dyes and hydrogen peroxide for a while, you can help the scabs heal by applying a few drops of olive oil or soothing cream.

Over-the-counter corticosteroids may also help. However, you should ask a dermatologist before applying medication.

Seborrheic dermatitis can be triggered by a reaction to hair dye

to remove traces of hair dye

Do you know that dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is one of the most common causes of scalp scabs?

The scabs can be small or larger, together or separate. They’re usually annoying or itchy and fall off on their own, sticking to the hair. So far, it’s not clear what can trigger them.  There’s an extensive list of things that can cause dermatitis and scabs. Hair dye is one of them. .

Don’t worry. It’s not contagious, and anyone can be affected, as it’s more common than you think.

You should ask a dermatologist because he/she will give you the necessary treatment.

In the meantime, you can use dandruff shampoos or shampoos containing ingredients such as salicylic acid or selenium sulfide to say goodbye to dandruff and dermatitis. These shampoos can be found everywhere, and almost all commercial brands have them. Some are Dove scalp, Head & Shoulders, Suave Scalp, etc.

Chemical burn from hair dye

Chemical burns can be caused by misuse of hair coloring products.

You have to respect the hair dye exposure times. Both too much time and bad rinsing can cause a burn.

If you leave the hair dye for too long believing that your gray hair will look better, it’s a mistake.  Hair dyes have an exposure time. It’s usually well indicated in the instructions.  Respect it strictly.

You should also rinse well to avoid leaving chemical residues on the scalp. Whenever you dye your hair, take the time to do it right. Avoid overexposing the health of your scalp.

Avoid re-dyeing your hair until the skin is healed. Ask a doctor and  avoid magical preparations that could worsen the situation.

I advise you to wash your hair with gentle massages and a product for sensitive scalp. For example, Kerastase Bain Vital Dermo-Calm will help soothe irritation and inflammation.

If you cannot get it, you can use the Klorane hair products with Peony, which is also soothing. Aloe Vera in the fridge could also help you, as it’s a natural and very refreshing product. Don’t apply any oil because they usually contain alcohol.

Some skin types are more sensitive to certain hair coloring products.

Reactions can happen for any reason. For example, when we change brands and their formulas are different, or when we don’t follow the product instructions. Also, for no reason, or because we no longer tolerate a chemical component.

The scabs are an indication that something happened with the dye and your skin. It can be a one-time occurrence or it can happen every time you color your hair.

Try to take every precaution before coloring your hair again. Respect the exposure times and do the allergy test. If the condition continues, you should consider another type of natural hair dye.
