  • If you wash your hair immediately after coloring it, it may lose some color.
  • Alternatively, if you wash your hair ten hours after coloring, it may lose some shine.
  • And, if you wash your hair 24 hours after coloring it, some frizz may appear.
  • So, the first thing you need to do is keep calm. I’ll tell you what to do if you accidentally wash your hair after coloring it.

Did you accidentally wash your hair after coloring it?

The first thing you should do is stay calm. IT’S NOT SERIOUS. Your hair isn’t going to fall out, and your color isn’t going to be ruined. Are you better now?

Let’s move on.

I think I made it pretty clear that if you accidentally washed your hair after coloring it, there won’t be serious consequences.

Still, I suggest an exercise to calm your mind. The following information will bring you peace.

  • Sit in a comfortable position. Relax in a chair with your back loose without tension.
  • Close your eyes and inhale deeply through your nose with your mouth closed.
  • Exhale slowly through your nose

Repeat the cycle five times. Feel your lungs fill with air. When you exhale, release worry and anguish.

Open your eyes. How do you feel?

Are you calmer and more open to read what I’ll tell you?

I’ll tell you that  I always recommend my clients wash their hair only three days after applying the hair color.

But, if you wash it before that time, it won’t be the end of the world.

Your color won’t disappear. Nor will you go bald.

What will happen?

It all depends on how the time between your coloring session and when you washed it.

If you washed your hair immediately after coloring it, your color will lose some intensity

This means that if you applied a dark brown hair dye and washed your hair an hour after dyeing, your hair will still be dark brown.

Only  the color will lose a little bit of intensity.

What should you do from now on? The only thing you should do is avoid washing your hair again for three days. And when you do, remember to rinse it with cold water.

This way, you’ll prevent the dye from fading further and the color will last longer.

If you wash your hair up to ten hours after coloring, the color will lose its shine

In this case, there is less chance of losing color, but you’ll probably lose some shine because most of the cuticles will be closed.

In other words, your hair will lose moisture and nutrients due to open and broken cuticles.

The shine, softness, and manageability of your mane depend solely on the moisture and condition of your cuticles.

What should you do?

It’s very simple, don’t wash your hair for 72 hours. Also, after rinsing, apply a few drops of essential oils to your wet hair.

You can opt for coconut, argan, or linseed oil, which are ideal for rebuilding the outermost part of your hair, i.e. the cuticles.

After a few applications of the oil, your color-treated hair will regain the shine you may have lost after washing your color-treated hair by accident.

If you washed your hair 24 hours after coloring it, frizz may appear

But, I’ll let you in on a secret. Frizz always appears with the first wash after coloring your hair.

Usually, the excess color and all the dirt that accumulated in your mane during the days you didn’t wash your hair is removed.

So, when you wash your hair three days after coloring it, the shampoo will wash away the grease, dye residue, and dirt. And these elements weigh your hair down.

So, after washing, your hair will feel more volatile and some frizz may appear.

On the other hand, don’t forget that permanent hair color is applied with a developer and contains ammonia. They’re two chemicals that strip your hair of moisture.

And when your hair loses moisture, frizz is likely to appear.

Don’t despair! The solution is simple.  All you need to do is apply two or three drops of anti-frizz serum.

I also recommend that you use an extra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to repair your hair and restore lost moisture.

Conclusions

It’s always advisable to wait 72 hours to wash your hair after coloring. But if you wash it a few hours later, say between two and ten hours after coloring, there will be no serious consequences.

At most, your color will lose shine or intensity, and some frizz will appear.

So, take a breath. The world won’t end, and there are solutions to try!
