How to color your faded red hair to light brown?

faded hair dye

When red hair fades, it can leave a brown or orange tone in your hair, depending on what color of red you chose.

  • If the red tone you had in your hair was darker or more intense, when it fades it will become brown.
  • If the red tone you had in your hair was light or fire-colored, when it fades it becomes orange.

Why is this important?

Let me tell you.

The tone your previously red hair becomes when it fades will be the base for the brown color you’re looking to use.

Generally, brown tones are darker than red ones.

Including light brown, which is number 6.

Most reds start at number 7.

This way we can forget about complicated and damaging processes such as bleaching your hair.

However, oftentimes the remaining red color in your hair is too strong and it’s not easy to get rid of.

What can we do about this?

Use the reflect color for the dye you used.

Have you heard of reflect colors before?

The reflect color is the second number that appears after the primary dye number.

For example:

  • 8-3: blond (8) 3 (gold)
  • 6-1: light brown (6) 1 (ash)

This way, the reflect neutralizes the reflects that you don’t like.

  • If your hair becomes too orange, you can apply an ash blond.
  • If your hair becomes too ash blond, you can apply a gold.

That way you can adjust the tone to fit the result you wanted.

This is a great alternative for faded red hair since red is so persistent and tends to show through other dyes.

In this article, I’m going to tell you what reflect of light brown you should apply to neutralize red or orange colors so that your hair becomes the shade that you dreamed of.

What reflect tone of light brown should I use to get rid of leftover red colors?

So, we already know that red becomes orange or brown when it fades.

But what happens if that red doesn’t completely fade?

You probably don’t want to walk out on the streets with half orange and half red hair.

The solution to this problem is in color reflects.

Like we talked about, that second number after the main one that appears on hair dye is the reflect number.

  • If it’s 6-3, the 6 means light brown, and the 3 means gold
  • If it’s 7-1, the 7 means dark blond, and the 1 means ash blond

Remember that these numbers are important because the reflect can neutralize tones that possibly appear after dyeing that you’re not a fan of.

In this case, red.

See what I’m talking about?

  •  The solution to get rid of remaining red tones is to apply a light brown with a reflect color that neutralizes the red.

To achieve this, you need to use a light brown chocolate, 6-7.

That’ll take care of those remaining red colors in your hair.

  • Another situation is that your hair became too orange after it faded.

If you applied a light red color – like the Little Mermaid, for example! – this is pretty common.

You’ll start looking less like the Little Mermaid and more like a carrot.

To get rid of that orange color, you need to – of course – apply a reflect to neutralize the orange.

This situation needs a light ash brown hair color, 6-1.

Once you apply the dye, you’ll see that there are no more signs of orange in your hair.

  • And the last situation is that your hair faded into brown.

This happened because you used a dark red dye.

For this one, you don’t need any specific reflect tone.

Just apply a light brown 6 dye.

Why is that?

It’s easy. That color of brown your hair faded to, is brown number 5.

That way if you apply light brown 6, it will come out perfectly with no problems at all.

Now that you know what reflect brown colors you need to apply, let me tell you step-by-step how to apply the dye to your hair.

Step-by-step guide on how to apply light brown dye to faded red hair

Naturally, we start by knowing the tone of light brown you want to apply.

As I mentioned in the previous section, it depends on your base color.

  • If you want to neutralize red: milk chocolate 6-7.
  • If you want to neutralize orange: light ash brown 6-1.
  • If you want another tone of brown: light brown 6.

Excellent! Now that you know what to do, you can get what you need at a salon or drug store and dye away!

Here’s your shopping list:

  • The dye kit for the light brown color you want to use
  • Gloves
  • Hair coloring brush

Once you have all of these, you’re ready to begin.

Step 1: Prepare your hair

Before anything else, you need to brush your hair, it can’t be tangled when you apply the dye.

Step 2: Prepare the light brown dye

The kit you bought will have everything you need.

Mix the tube of dye with the developer and stir until it is homogenous.

Make sure it’s well-mixed!

Step 3: Applying the light brown dye

Start to apply the mix of light brown dye from the roots to the tips with the hair dye applicator included in your kit.

Use the coloring brush or your hands to distribute the dye in your hair, whichever is easiest for you.

You should cover all of your hair, make sure that no part goes untouched!

Once you applied all of the light brown dye to your hair, leave it in for 45 minutes.

You should always read and follow the factory instructions written on the package as well.

Step 4: Rinse

Once the dye has sat in your hair long enough, you need to rinse your hair.

Use warm water and make sure that you wash off all of the dye.

Apply the post-coloring treatment included in the kit.

This post-coloring treatment will hydrate your hair and leave it shiny.

Step 5: Drying and styling

Dry your hair as you usually do.

You can use a hairdryer, flat iron, or curling iron.

I recommend that you apply a few drops of anti-frizz serum to keep your hair from getting out of control.
