Are you thinking about using oil right after coloring your hair?
If I were you, I’d think twice. Because if you’ve just colored your hair, either in a salon or at home, it’s not a good idea to apply oil to it.
Because all you’ll do is wash out the color.
Many of my clients think that applying oil to their hair after coloring it will add moisture to the hair, making it softer and frizz-free. But, in reality, the dye will fade if you use oil on your hair right after coloring it. And I’ll tell you why later.
Also, most hair dyes contain moisturizing agents. For example, using Garnier’s Nutrisse Line will nourish your hair while coloring it anyway.
It includes avocado oil in the coloring formula, which repairs and nourishes dry hair, adding shine and softness and helping you to fight frizz.
L’Oréal Paris Excellence hair color contains ceramide, collagen, and pro-keratin, nourishing your hair.
Many boxed hair dyes even include post-application conditioning treatments to moisturize the hair after coloring.
So why would you want to add more products to your hair after coloring?
With all this in mind, I recommend you wait at least three days to oil your hair after coloring. Why? I’ll tell you about it below.

Wait three days to use oil on your hair after dyeing it
When you apply permanent hair dye, the developer opens the hair cuticles so the color can penetrate inside the hair, changing its color. But the cuticles don’t close immediately when you rinse the dye out.
In fact, they take three days to close. That’s why it’s advisable not to wash your hair for at least three days after coloring.

What would happen if you use oil right after coloring your hair?
Since you’ve just colored your hair, the inner layer of the hair is full of color molecules. The core is absorbing and assimilating them. If you apply oil at this point, the core will expel color because it cannot absorb the dye and oil together.
Therefore, the color will start to fade.
So it’s vital that you don’t use oil right after coloring your hair. Also, remember not to wash your hair for at least three days after coloring. Because during that time, the hair cuticles will close completely, trapping the color molecules of the dye.
What if you apply a semi-permanent hair color? You can’t use oil right after coloring your hair here either.
Because semi-permanent hair coloring adheres to the outer layer of the hair. It doesn’t contain ammonia and you don’t apply it with developer.
Therefore, if you use oil right after applying a semi-permanent hair dye, the next time you rinse your hair, the color will fade completely.
If you dye your hair with semi-permanent hair color and want to moisturize it, wait three days and then apply a sulfate-free keratin moisturizing mask or an aloe vera gel mask.
Conclusion
You shouldn’t use oil immediately after coloring your hair. Otherwise, the color will fade. It’s important you wait at least three days to apply oil after coloring your hair if you want to moisturize your hair and protect the color.
