for even results

  • Bleaching black hair will take an hour and a half to two hours, depending on your hair length, the products you use, and other factors.
  • The first bleaching session will get your hair to dark brown. If you want to lighten it further, you’ll need a few more bleaching sessions.
  • Between one bleaching session and the next, you should allow at least three weeks for your hair to recover.

To know how long it’ll take to bleach your black hair, you need to consider the shade you want to achieve. Bleaching black hair to a light brown is not the same as bleaching it to a platinum blonde. .

Oh…time, time, time… Time is what we can never have too much of, no matter how much we run like the roadrunner after the clock hands.

Let me tell you something: if you’re thinking about bleaching your black hair, and you want to know how long it will take to get a light color, you’d better start thinking about buying some watches.

Although professional bleaching takes no more than an hour,   transforming your hair from black to blonde takes much more. .

It’s that simple. The most important factor is knowing what shade you want to get to.

To bleach black hair to a medium brown won’t take the same as to a platinum blonde.

The bigger difference between your black hair and the target color, the longer the bleaching process will take.

The target color is a fundamental factor. For the sake of your hair, you can’t go from black to platinum blonde in one day, two, or three.

You’ll have to take several bleaching sessions that take weeks, even months, not hours.

In the first session, you’ll reach a dark brown (3) or auburn (4). Then, wait at least 20 days. Then, you can bleach your hair again to reach a light brown (5) or dark blonde (6).

Shall we do the math?

In that situation, there’d be 2 hours of the first bleaching session, three weeks in between, and 2 hours of the second bleaching session.  That’s just to bleach a black hair to a dark blonde at best.

The lighter the color you want to go, the longer it’ll take to bleach your black hair.

How long does a bleaching session on black hair take on black hair?

before applying it to the hair

In the hands of an experienced colorist, a bleaching session is not a very long process.

For example, I take between one and a half to two hours to bleach black hair. That’s from the moment the client sits down until I rinse the bleaching mixture out. Do you want the details?

  • Hair preparation: 5 to 10 minutes
  • Preparation of the mixture: 5 minutes
  • Application of the mixture: 10 minutes
  • Exposure time: 20 to 30 minutes
  • Rinse: 5 minutes

Of course, these times can vary. However, a bleaching session will never take more than two hours. Why could these times vary?

What factors could make bleaching black hair take more or less time?

return to natural color

  • Bleaching waist-length black hair is not the same as bleaching shoulder-length black hair.
  • If you decide to apply a product to moisturize your hair, it’ll take longer.
  • If you use a 40-volume developer, the exposure times of the mixture are shorter.

Now, be careful with the 40-volume developer!

Although it’ll shorten bleaching times, the damage to your hair will be multiplied by 10. I never use a 40-volume developer to bleach because it exposes the hair to unnecessary risk.

You might take longer to bleach your hair, but in the end, you’ll have healthy hair to wear the shade you want. .

So far, we know that a bleaching session on black hair will take two hours. What if you want to go blonde?

Keep your calculator in hand because that’s what I’ll talk about next.

How many bleaching sessions does it take to lighten black hair?

It’ll depend on the target color. The lighter color, the more sessions you’ll need. It could take weeks and even months.

Black is the darkest color on the scale. To remove it, you have to go through several colors.

After the first bleaching session, the black color will be gone, but your hair will be a dark brown or auburn. Are you looking for a lighter shade?

You should allow three weeks for a new bleaching session. It’ll leave your hair in a red shade, one of the most difficult ones to remove. .

If you’re not looking for an auburn or reddish tone, you’ll need to do three more bleaching sessions. It’ll take at least nine weeks to reach a light blonde tone.

At that point, if you want to remove the yellow from your blonde, you can apply 1 or 2 more bleaching sessions to reach platinum 10 or butter 11. They’re the extra blonde tones.

Having a calculator at hand, we can say that:

  • If your hair is black and you want to get to a light brown, you’ll need two bleaching sessions. It’ll take 6 weeks.
  • If your hair is black and you want to go to medium shades, you’ll need 4 bleaching sessions. It’ll take 9 weeks.
  • If your hair is black and you want to achieve light tones, you’ll need 7 bleaching sessions. It’ll take 18 weeks.
  • If your hair is black and you want to go extra light, you’ll need 8 bleaching sessions. It’ll take 21 weeks.

I assume that, in addition to bleaching your black hair, you’re concerned about your health. You have to respect the three weeks between bleaching sessions. Otherwise, you risk losing more than just the pigmentation of your hair.

Don’t believe everything you see on social media. It’s just snapshots. When the camera goes off, you’re left with dehydrated, lifeless hair.

The best thing you can do for your black hair is a bleaching plan. If you do it with a professional colorist, so much the better.
