what unnatural color to dye hair

  • If you’re thinking about an unnatural color to dye your hair, you have two alternatives.
  • On one hand, you could make a radical color change and go for pink, turquoise, gray, or violet. I’ll tell you what you’ll need to achieve these colors.
  • On the other hand, if you want to wear an unnatural hair color, but the change is less radical, opt for balayage or highlights in fantasy colors. And the best unnatural colors to start with are pastel pink, salmon, or gray.

Do you want me to let you in on a secret?

When I get a client who  wants a radical color change in her hair, I feel a fire growing inside me. They’re usually looking to get out of the natural or more traditional colors.

As a hairdresser, hair color changes represent one of the biggest challenges.

I mean, trimming the ends or applying a professional moisturizing treatment is also interesting.

But,  helping a client to choose a new hair color, let alone a non-natural color, is such a challenge that it gives me an adrenaline rush as I’d gone skydiving.

Well, I haven’t parachuted yet, but that feeling of descending vertically, soaring through the skies, while watching how the ground is getting closer and closer, must be mind-blowing.

It must be as amazing as the unnatural colors you can use.

But before I mention what those colors are, let me ask you a question:

  •  Are you looking for a radical hair color change? You can opt for fantasy colors, such as pink, green, violet, or blue.
  •  Still not up for such a drastic hair color change? You can choose a balayage or Californian highlights in fantasy colors.

I must give you a warning.

If your hair is damaged, dry, or brittle, unnatural or fantasy colors aren’t your best option.

To apply these colors, you’ll need to bleach your hair. And damaged hair shouldn’t be bleached.

If your base color is a very dark color, for example, dark brown, you’ll also have to bleach your hair. And to do so, it must be healthy.

I don’t want you to feel disappointed.

I’m not saying that if your hair is damaged or has a dark base, you’ll never be able to color it with unnatural colors.

Instead,  if your hair is seriously damaged and you need to bleach it to apply these colors, you’ll need to repair it before coloring it.

And luckily, there are many professional treatments, such as OLAPLEX or BRAZILIAN BOND BUILDER that will help you do it faster and safer.

Therefore, my recommendation as a hairdresser, is that if you decide on these colors, go to a professional.

That way, you’ll dye your hair in unnatural, very personal, and unique colors, without putting your hair at risk.

So many options!

And you can match their unique mystery with the way you dress and do your makeup, and also with the way you leave your mark on the world.

But, my pro tip, is that before you decide on any of these unnatural colors, consider your base hair color.

  •  If your hair is light blonde 8,  you can opt for pink or violet.
  •  If your hair is very light blonde 9,  you can choose turquoise or mint green.
  •  Finally, if your hair is extra light blonde 10,  you can choose any fantasy color from Barbie pink to white, like the one in our imagination, the snow queen.

Why should your base color be light?

Because these unnatural colors can be found in one type of hair color: semi-permanent hair color.

  • The advantage: unique and very personal colors.
  • The disadvantage: they fade with washing. Therefore, you’ll need to be on the lookout for color refreshing to keep it vibrant.

If your current color is dark and your hair is healthy, you should start with a bleaching plan.

But remember that bleaching is a very aggressive chemical process that could burn your hair. That’s why it’s best to go to a professional.

Now, I can imagine your impatience because all the fantasy colors look beautiful to you. So, which one can you choose?

The first thing to consider is your skin color.

At this point, it’ll all depend on your taste and the style you want to achieve. But since I’m here to help you, I’ll give you some tips regarding each color.

Pink

  • If your skin is dark, you can choose the darker ones for a stunning look.
  • If your skin is very pale, you can choose the lighter pinks to give warmth to your face.

Turquoise

This is one of the most difficult unnatural colors to match with wardrobe and makeup.  It looks great on pale skin.  However, I don’t recommend it for dark skin because it reduces the brightness of your features.

It’s an ideal color for summer because it matches white clothes and beach dresses.

Gray

It’s ideal for women with dark or very pale skin. And best of all, you can choose from a wide range of these grays, from pearl gray to smoke gray.

Violet

  •  If your skin is very pale,  opt for lavender or lilac for a romantic look.
  •  Alternatively, if your skin is dark,  opt for more strident and deep violets to highlight the features of your face.

Now, if you like any of these unnatural colors, but don’t dare to a very radical change, you also have another option. And that’s what I’ll talk about next.

You can apply a balayage or highlights in pink, salmon, or gray.

pink balayage

When  these colors fade, they leave no trace of color in the hair.

What do I mean?

For example, when turquoise fades, there are green traces left. Also, when violet fades, it can leave blue traces.

And in that case, if you want to go back to blonde hair, you’ll have to bleach it.

That’s why I recommend non-natural pastels which will fade with washing leaving your hair the color it was before you colored it.

  • You can start with more romantic colors, such as pastel pink, which will give your face warmth.
  • If you want, you can also apply gray over your balayage. Gray that will contrast with your roots and will lighten up your face.

If you have Californian or localized highlights, go for stronger unnatural colors.
  • The purples, will give you strength. When they fade, you can also opt for violet or red.
  • Blues will give you light, and when they fade you can choose turquoise or green.
  • Reds and fuchsias are ideal for dark or very pale skin.

As you can see, you don’t need to dye all your hair with an unnatural color to change your look. You can choose the color in some sections to achieve a change that will not go unnoticed.

Conclusions

The most sought-after non-natural colors in the salon are fantasy colors. They are unique and customizable.

But remember that to dye your hair with any of these non-natural colors, if your hair is dark, you must bleach it to achieve a light base.

Now the decision is yours. Will you dye all your hair with any of these colors, or will you start by dyeing a few strands?
