Can I leave tea tree oil in my hair overnight? Is it dangerous?

Mask before going to bed

For 5 months, I’ve been leaving tea tree oil on my hair overnight. The results are incredible. My hair is stronger and it falls out a lot less when I shower and brush it.

But attention. You can’t simply take the oil and dump it on your head as if it were holy water.

You should use a carrier oil. Yes, yes, I know. It seems like basic Chinese or one more magical, naturist recipe. But I can assure you that it isn’t either of those things.

Since I let this product sit on my hair overnight, my life has changed completely.

But you need to promise me that you will use it correctly! And the correct way to do it is to be sure to dilute it correctly with carrier oils like coconut, jojoba or castor oil.

Because if you don’t do it that way, you could irritate your scalp and cause dermatitis, since the hair follicles get infected and inflamed. This can damage your roots and cause hair loss.

And that’s no joke. Let me give you an example.

My sister and I have always suffered from hair loss. And I think that in great part it’s because we abuse the flat iron.

In order to have straight hair every day of our lives, every other day we used the flat iron.

Imagine the damage that the hair accumulates!

We started to notice more hair loss than usual when we showered. Also, our ends were split and the amount of frizz was increasing.

What’s more, in my case, when I finished passing the flat iron, there were mountains of hair on the floor of the bathroom.

We started to imagine the worst of scenarios. Receding hairlines, bald spots in some parts of the scalp, and goodbye long manes.

It seemed that we had a one-way ticket to being bald. And the truth is, not all of us can pay for a trip to Turkey to get hair implants.

So, we talked to a dermatologist friend and she recommended we use tea tree oil. But she was clear about her instructions: dilute it with another oil.

I followed her instructions and the results were amazing. Gradually, I noticed that the hair loss reduced. My hair, which before was fine and broken started to get thicker.

But for my sister… oh evil impatience! She decided to use the oil without diluting it, and on top of that, left it in her hair all night while she slept, two times a week.

The results?

At first, her scalp started to lightly itch which after two weeks turned into a true hell for her head. It itched so much that she was getting scabs on the wounds from scratching.

What do you think went wrong?

Exactly!

She hadn’t diluted the oil, she hadn’t used it correctly, and that’s why, she didn’t get the same results.

The perfect tea tree oil mixture to use as an overnight mask

tea tree and coconut oil

The secret of tea tree oil is that it basically improves the blood circulation which eliminates toxins and stimulates hair follicles.

Also, it contains antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which allow your scalp to stay cleaner and healthier.

That’s why, it stimulates hair growth.

But, as I told you before, you should never use it on your hair without diluting. Now that we’ve made this point very clear, let’s move on to the papers.

Ingredients:

  • 5 drops of tea tree oil
  • A tablespoon of coconut or castor oil
  • One plastic container to prepare the mixture

Application:

  • Mix the ingredients until they are a homogenous liquid
  • Wash your hair, when possible, with a sulfate-free shampoo, and don’t use conditioner
  • Dry your hair gently with a towel to dry out the excess water
  • Apply the mixture starting at your roots and to the middle of the hair. Be sure some massages with the pads of your fingers for ten minutes over your whole scalp.
  • Finally, with the rest of the oil that is on your fingers, distribute to the ends.
  • Wrap your hair in a plastic cap to not stain your pillowcase.
  • Now, you can go to sleep because while you count sheep, the oil will work its magic.

I can assure you that the magic will appear, of course, not from one day to the next.

In my case, for example, I slept with the tea tree oil in my hair twice a week, and after the first month, the results were amazing.

Do you have dandruff and are afraid that the oil will cause more problems?

  • 15 drops of tea tree oil
  • The necessary amount of almond oil

Application:

  • Fill the bottle ¾ of the way with almond oil.
  • Add 15 drops of tea tree oil and mix well.
  • Apply the mixture to your scalp, mixing it for various minutes, assuring that the scalp is completely saturated.
  • Wrap your hair in a shower cap, and let the mixture sit overnight.
  • In the morning, wash your hair as you normally would with a shampoo and then apply conditioner.

Are you one of those that hates leaving a product on your hair overnight?

Then you should simply add the oil to your normal shampoo.

To half a cup of shampoo, you can add 10 drops of tea tree oil.

After, simply wash your hair as you usually would, but let the mixture sit for five minutes before rinsing to allow the scalp to absorb the benefits.

Conclusions

Do you want to know what happened with my sister?

First, she learned that impatience gives bad advice.

After, she made sure that her scalp wasn’t inflamed anymore and there were no signs of lesions and she started to use the tea tree oil.

But this time, she kept in mind the recommendation of our dermatologist friend, and she diluted it with coconut oil.

And at the end of the month, she started to notice that she lost less hair. And that her ends weren’t so broken.

So, if you ask me: does it work to leave tea tree oil in our hair overnight?

My answer is a round yes as long as you use it correctly.

Are you thinking of using the oil in your hair to stimulate growth?
