Did toner turn your hair gray? Do this to fix it

hair turned gray

  • If toner turned your hair gray, the healthiest way to fix it is to wait for it to wash out over time.
  • If you can’t wait for that process, which would take two weeks if you wash your hair three times a week, you can use clarifying shampoo or a shampoo with sulfates.
  • As regards those two alternatives, clarifying shampoo is the less damaging option. Shampoo with sulfates, instead, tends to dehydrate your hair.

Life is full of surprises!

You applied a toner to neutralize the pale yellow undertones in your hair. When you rinsed the toner out and dried your hair, your mane was completely gray.

As you probably “want to fix everything right now”,  you want to bleach your hair to get rid of that gray.

However, that would be really crazy. Do you know why?

Because you’ve just applied a toner with peroxide. It means that your hair has undergone a harsh chemical process.

Can you imagine what could happen to it if you applied bleach on top of that?

It would be shredded!

Besides, bleaching is unnecessary at this point.

Even though the toner is applied with a developer, its pigments fade with time.

Therefore, if you wait for four or five washes, the excess pigments in the toner, which is what turned your hair gray, will wash out.

Toner works by opening the cuticles of your hair fiber for the pigments to reach the hair core and be deposited there.

After the core has absorbed all the pigments, it begins to expel the excess toner. That is why, after the first wash, the gray will be a bit faded. It’ll continue to wash out after the next washes.

If you don’t want to wait two weeks for the toner to fully wash out because you can’t stand to look at your gray hair, there are two methods to fade the toner  faster.

And that’s what I’ll tell you about next.

If your hair is dry or frizzy, use a clarifying shampoo to remove the excess toner that turned your hair gray

remove toner from hair

I usually use clarifying shampoo in the salon before a chemical process like bleaching.

Why?

Clarifying shampoo works as a deep-cleaner to get rid of oil, dirt, and even product build-up in your hair.

Therefore,  clarifying shampoo is real detox for the hair.

You can use it to remove excess toner as well. Also, as it’s neutral, it doesn’t damage the hair.

Its application is very simple and you can do it in the shower:

  • Wet your hair with plenty of warm water.
  • Apply a clarifying shampoo from roots to ends. Scrub thoroughly and leave it for three minutes.
  • Rinse your hair and repeat.
  • Massage the lengths of your hair and leave it in for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse again and apply the conditioner.

As soon as you dry your hair, you’ll notice a huge difference. The clarifying shampoo will have removed the gray from your hair.

If your hair is healthy and you don’t have a clarifying shampoo at hand, you can use a shampoo with sulfates

remove hair dye

I must warn you that it may dry out your hair a bit. Complement the wash with a deep conditioning moisturizer with keratin.

Shampoo removes the dirt and residues accumulated. It usually has sulfates, which is the same as saying that they include detergents.

If you color your hair regularly but carelessly, you’ll probably notice that the color is dull and washed out after a few days. Sulfates are to blame for that.

That’s why sulfates fade the gray toner and leave your hair ashier.

Of course, you’ll have to wash your hair for three consecutive days with shampoo with sulfates. And that can dry out your hair.

  • Wet your hair with hot water.
  • Apply shampoo from roots to ends.
  • Massage deeply. Lather.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Apply a moisturizing conditioner and leave it in for 3 minutes.
  • Rinse again.

You’ll remove 20% of the toner with the first wash.

Now, my advice is to deeply moisturize your hair if you decide to wash it three consecutive days with a sulfate shampoo.

I don’t mean simply using a conditioner after shampooing. I’m talking about intensive moisturizing treatment.

You can use coconut oil, a natural super moisturizer, by applying it like a mask to work overnight.  Yes, you can sleep with coconut oil overnight in your hair.

Wrap your hair with a plastic cap after applying the coconut oil to avoid staining the pillowcase. The following morning, rinse with warm to cold water. You’ll notice your hair is moisturized and more manageable again.

Conclusions

If the toner turned your hair too gray, wait for the excess pigments to wash out gradually. It’ll take about two weeks.

But if you’re in a hurry to get it out, you can opt for a clarifying shampoo if your hair has signs of damage or a shampoo with sulfates. Remember that the latter may cause damage to your hair.
