4 reasons not to cut your ends individually

heat tool abuse

  •   Cutting the ends individually would be a very hard job.   You’d need to remove only the ends strand by strand, and that would be very complicated (not to mention trimming each hair, which would be completely impossible).

  •   If you cut your ends individually, your hair would’t be even.   Not all split ends are always the same length throughout your mane.

  • Also,   removing individual ends doesn’t guarantee that all split ends will disappear. So, you may even worsen your hair.   Why?

Removing individual split ends would weigh down the hair and give it more volume. Nothing could be further from what you’re looking for, right?

  • Alternatively, if you cut the split ends individually and have a straight cut, it’ll be layered and uneven.

Before you cut your ends individually, you should always think about what will happen when the new ends start to grow.

If they split again, any of the 4 reasons I described above would be more of a problem than a solution.

Cutting the ends individually isn’t recommended, but there are 2 exceptions

split ends on curly hair

All rules have exceptions.

I’ve already made it clear that cutting the ends individually isn’t recommended at all, but there are 2 exceptions. Look:

  • If the split ends were a few and very noticeable, then you could cut them individually. They won’t change too much the shape, the length, or the structure of the cut.

  • If your curls are defined, you could cut them individually. It wouldn’t be as noticeable as it would be on a straight, sleek mane. In any case, it’s quite tiresome. So, it’s best to cut them conventionally.

Why do the ends split? 5 possible reasons

heat of the flat iron causes split ends

  • Excessive blow-drying and flat ironing.
  • Nutritional problems.
  • Very fine hair.
  • Bleached hair.
  • Bad use of cutting tools such as razors.

YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN: Why do I have split ends if I don’t use heat in my hair?

These issues cause your ends to ” bloom” or split, which makes it harder to style and tame your mane.

Also split ends can lead to hair loss when you constantly pull your hair to comb it.   Split ends make your hairstyles look messy and bring other consequences as well.

However, I don’t recommend you cut them individually to solve those issues.

How to cut split ends correctly

cut split ends with sharp scissors

Conventional split ends can be cut in either a straight cut, a tip cut towards the center, a semicircle cut, etc.

Depending on where the split ends start, a single cut will remove them, and solve the problem.   It’s the opposite if you try to cut your ends one by one.

However, if you’re wearing a cropped or layered cut, and all the ends are split, you should cut the ends with different professional techniques. That way, the cut doesn’t shorten your hair.

Myths and facts about trimming your ends

cut split ends by strands

  • You have to cut your ends every month. FALSE: No haircut needs to be repeated monthly. It’s possible, but for pleasure and not for the obligation.

  •   It’s recommended to cut the ends individually. TOTALLY FALSE.   As I told you above, there are many reasons why you shouldn’t do it.

  • You can trim your ends with fire. This is TRUE

But it’s only one of the many techniques that exist and it can only be done by a professional. High precision tools are used for this purpose. Also, this isn’t the only way to cauterize the ends.

  • Cutting the ends serves to renew the hair. TRUE: Trimming the ends revitalizes your hair.

  • Oils help keep the ends closed. TRUE. However, not all oils are good for this.

Argan oil, linseed oil, coconut oil, almond oil, and castor oil are very rich in vitamins A, B, and E, mineral salts, and fatty acids that regenerate and moisture your hair.

As they nourish and regenerate dry and damaged hair, you can use them as a serum after washing your hair. They provide shine and softness. How to apply them?

Once every two or three washes, apply a very small amount of oil to damp hair.

Sometimes, that’s the main reason for split ends. Each pair of scissors is designed for a purpose. Barber scissors have a specific design and functionality for cutting hair, and there are even models that not only cut but also cauterize the hair as they cut it.

So, the next time you think about cutting your ends individually or traditionally with a pair of paper scissors, remember that they are only for paper, not for your hair!

Conclusion: a professional will never cut your ends individually

In so many years of professional experience, I have seen everything from people who cut their hair with anything to people who think they are the authoritative words on the subject just by watching tutorials on the Internet.

As I told you in this article, the individual or conventional haircut is not a minor issue. It’s as or more important than the full cut. It has rules and techniques that make your hair look perfect, and your ends take longer to split or, better yet, never split again.

Cutting split ends individually is not advisable. Just pay a little attention and you’ll see that a professional will never do a cut in this way,   unless it’s one of those “specialists” that populate social networks.

These would indeed cut split ends individually and even with paper-cutting scissors.

As with every article I write, I invite you to make an appointment at your regular salon and leave the job in the hands of true professionals.

An individual haircut made at home or in the hands of irresponsible people will make your hair look bad. To fix it, you’ll have to go to a hairdresser to cut your hair even more to fix the mess.

Trust your reliable hairdresser, and you’ll have amazing ends. GO FOR IT!
