- Three months after applying the keratin treatment to your hair, the effects will start to wear off.
- You’ll notice it because your roots will have a different texture than your mid-lengths and lengths. Also, your ends will feel rougher.
- In that case, what you should do is touch up the keratin treatment. Later, I’ll tell you how to take care of your hair after that touch-up for the keratin to last longer.

It’s that easy. When you notice that the keratin treatment is starting to wear off, you should touch it up.
The keratin treatment isn’t forever. As your hair grows, the roots will look different from the rest of your hair.
Also, the successive washes, heat tools, and an incorrect choice of hair products make keratin wear off. Your hair returns to the way it looked before applying it.
Now, the good news is that keratin doesn’t wear off in full. Only the keratin deposited on the outside of the hair, i.e. the cuticles, is removed. However, the keratin that was deposited in the hair core is still there.
Therefore, your hair is healthy on the inside, and you just need to add more keratin. So, you need to touch up the keratin treatment.
I have even better news for you.

The more you apply the keratin treatment, the less often you’ll need to touch it up.
Generally, a keratin treatment lasts for three months maximum if you take care of it properly. Each hair treatment you undergo requires proper care and maintenance.
For example, hair coloring should be touched up after thirty days to avoid color differences between the roots and the rest of the hair.
If you have a perm, you should wash your hair less frequently, and even dry your new curls with a blow dryer with a diffuser.
The keratin treatment doesn’t escape this rule. The good news is that once you apply a keratin treatment, you start on the road to restoring your hair’s health.
The more frequently you apply it, the less you’ll need to touch it up. Don’t you believe me?
Let me tell you the story of Anita, who visited me at the salon two years ago for a keratin treatment for the first time.
Anita’s story is probably very similar to yours. She constantly struggled with the frizz in her hair. So, she flat ironed her hair too often. And that caused her hair to lose shine, softness, and moisture.
The truth is that keratin offered two advantages in her case.
First, it would repair her hair. Second, she would no longer need to flat iron her hair every other day.
Of course, after her first keratin application, she went back to the salon because her hair wasn’t the same.
I explained to her that the duration of the treatment is always a maximum of three months. However, if she reapplied the treatment, she would regain the worn-off texture.
Therefore, we did. The best part is that the keratin treatment lasted longer with successive applications. So, after applying keratin to her hair four times, she now finally touches up the treatment once a year.
However, to do it less frequently, you should pay attention to maintenance. And that’s what I’m going to talk about next.
How to maintain your keratin treatment after a touch-up
Once you leave the salon, the countdown to your next visit begins.
If you want to space out the application, you can use some specific products that you should include in your beauty routine to extend the effects of the keratin.
Let’s start with the shampoo. I’ll recommend two options that are as good as easy to get. They contain keratin.
- If you feel that your hair grows at a slower rate than normal, you can opt for Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo which also stimulates circulation in the scalp to promote hair growth.
- If you color your hair and also want to protect the color, your best option is Brazilian Blowout Anti Frizz Shampoo.
These shampoos will extend the duration of the keratin and control signs of wear-off as soon as they appear.
As for conditioners, I recommend OGX Brazilian Keratin Therapy and Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner.
Regardless of the brand you choose, when you use the conditioner, leave it on your hair for five to ten minutes to deeply hydrate it and protect the applied keratin.
Finally, it never hurts to use a keratin mask. One of the most used with excellent results by my clients is Blondwood Keratin Hair Mask.
Its application is very simple:
- Replace the conditioner with the mask after washing your hair. Cover the surface of your mane from roots to ends.
- Leave it on for a maximum of 10 minutes. Rinse.
You should avoid using the hairdryer or use it at least once a week.
You can also opt for Vitamins Keratin Hair Mask. It contains biotin, keratin, castor oil, and amino acids that reinforce your treatment.
In this case, I recommend using it once a week on wet hair. So, it’s not necessary to shampoo your hair beforehand.
Another mask with very good results on hair treated with keratin is Natural Formula Keratin Intense Hair Mask which you can use every time you wash your hair as a conditioner or twice a week as a repairing mask.
Conclusions
A keratin treatment lasts a maximum of three months. So, after that, you’ll notice that your hair is the same as before applying it.
But the good news is that you only need to renew the treatment. The more times you touch it up, the longer the keratin will last.
