How long does a keratin treatment take in a salon? And at home?

  • Doing a Keratin treatment in a salon can take between one and a half to two hours, depending on the hairdresser’s skill and the quality of tools she uses.
  • At home, it will take between two and a half to three hours.
  • The more skilled the person in charge, whether it’s the stylist or yourself, the less the keratin treatment will take.[/su_highlight]

Everything in life comes down to practice.

The more experience you gain in something, the less time it will take you to do it.

For example, I love baking my own bread.

I still remember the day I made my first homemade bread. It took me a whole morning!

Firstly, because of my anxiety to be doing it for the first time.

Secondly, because I measured the quantities many times and I was never sure.

Thirdly, because I had to let the dough rest. Finally, because I had to adjust the right temperature of the oven.

Since I didn’t have much practice, each step took me more than half an hour, and a master baker would do them in five minutes.

Today, after many baked pieces of bread and some scorched ones, I can proudly say that preparing a good homemade bread takes about two hours, with baking time included.

Practice is everything.

That’s why, if you decide to do the keratin treatment at home, it will take you much longer than it takes me at the salon. And there is a reason for that.

In my salon, I have all the professional tools to shorten the time. For example, very powerful hairdryers and ceramic flat irons.

Also, every week I perform several keratin treatments. I believe I could even apply the product with my eyes closed.

Whether you do it in the salon or at home, you’ll need to have time.

Why is it important that you give it some time?

Because each stage of treatment takes time, a time that must be strictly respected to achieve the best results.

If you apply keratin quickly and unevenly, you will not let the product work in the hair the same way.

If you straighten each strand five times instead of 15, the treatment will take less time, but you will notice frizz the next day.

How long does a keratin treatment take in a professional salon?

with gloves

If you decide to do the keratin treatment in a salon, you should have two hours. Is that too much?

Let’s see each stage with its corresponding time.

  • Hair washing: 5 to 10 (you can also skip this step if you wash your hair at home, but you will only be saving five or ten minutes)
  • Drying and brushing: 10 minutes
  • Keratin application: 15 to 20 minutes
  • Let keratin sit in hair: 20 minutes
  • Blow-Drying: 10 to 15 minutes
  • Straightening with flat iron: 30 to 45 minutes

Total: from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Now, this is an average, because everything depends on the skill of the stylist. Perhaps, if it is the first time you perform a treatment, it will take longer. It will also depend on the type of keratin used.

It does not take the same time to apply liquid keratin than a more solid one.

Now, let´s go back and check the partial times of each stage that I detailed before. Which part of the treatment takes longer?

Very good!

Sealing the keratin with the flat iron. That part is critical, and a professional stylist will never take less than 30 minutes to do it.

Why does it take so long?

Because each strand has to be straightened with a flat iron at least 15 times. No matter how hard you push the clock, it will take time.

It is the most important step because, thanks to this seal, your hair will look perfect.

Do you want to know what helps reduce the time it takes to perform the salon treatment?

The tools we use.

Professional dryers reach 6000 revolutions, while non-professional ones reach between 1200 and 2000 revolutions. The amount of revolutions of the dryer is what determines the drying time. The fewer revolutions, the longer the drying time.

In addition, professional flat irons reach very high temperatures, between 450°F or 230°C, while those sold for home use reach up to 190°C.

If your flat iron works with less temperature, you will probably have to use it in each strand more times. Therefore, it will take longer.

Therefore, it will always take less time to do the salon’s keratin treatment than at home.

How long does the keratin treatment take at home?

if not use it the right way

There is something that applies to all professions: practice makes perfect.

That is why a stylist, who also has professional tools, will take less to perform the keratin treatment.

If you decide to do it at home, it will take at least two and a half hours.  Can it take less time?

Yes, but your keratin or smoothing treatment will probably fail.

Let’s see the times for each stage of the treatment.

  • Hair washing: 15 minutes
  • Blow drying: 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the blow dryer you use.
  • Keratin application: 20 to 30 minutes
  • Let keratin sit in hair: 20 minutes
  • Brushing: 30 minutes
  • Straightening with a flat iron: from 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the intensity of your flat iron

Total time of keratin treatment at home: from 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours.

Conclusions

Nowadays, keratin treatments are affordable almost to all.

If you can invest a few bucks in your hair, want to get the best results, and don’t want to waste time, go to the salon. The experience in applying and sealing the product will be worth every penny.

If you have the time and, most importantly, the patience and perseverance to ensure a correct straightening, you can perform the keratin treatment at home.

However, you must know that you will need at least three hours to perform the treatment successfully.

Tell me, will you go to the salon or will you do the keratin treatment at home?
