When it comes to dyeing your hair blonde,  the time you need can easily go from hours to weeks or even months.

Because dyeing your hair blonde requires bleaching it before you dye since you can’t use a blonde dye on dark hair. No dye is able to lift your color so many levels.

So, the right questions would be:

  • How many salon visits will I need to dye my hair blonde?
  • How long will each of these visits take?

Because dyeing hair blonde usually means creating a color plan that could take up to nine months to complete.

It all depends on the color you’re starting from and what color you want to get to, for example:

  •  If you have dark brown level 3 hair and you want to get to a dark blonde level 6 , you’d only need one visit to the salon. So, the time you’d need to dye your hair blonde is between an hour and a half and two hours.

  •  If your hair is a dark blonde level 6 and you want to get lightest blonde 10 , you’d need two visits to the salon, and between these two visits, you’d need to let three weeks go by. So, in this case, to get blonde hair, you’d need to wait a month and invest between three and four hours.

  •  If your hair is black level 1 and you want to get to light blonde 8 , you’d need between three and four visits to the salon. And that’s when the timeline starts getting longer.

Every time you visit the salon, they will bleach your hair, which will take between 40 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how long your hair is.

Then, the hair colorist would need to tone your hair, which would take 30-40 minutes.

You’d also need to keep in mind a few other factors, like how much experience the hair colorist has, any waiting time you’d have to do in the salon and any unexpected surprises that might come up during the process.

And all of those factors can add up to more time.

So,  for each visit to the salon, dyeing your hair blonde will take two and a half to three hours.

So you can get a better idea of how long it will take to dye your hair blonde, let’s take a look at each possibility.

From the people who want to dye their black hair blonde to those that already have blonde hair but want to lighten it even more, are you with me?

In this case, we’re talking about  several visits to the salon, and a lot of time, maybe even months.

Why?

Because you need to take into account the current color of your hair – how dark it is – and to what level of blonde you want to get.

The color scale goes from black 1 to lightest blonde 10, with the darkest colors being:

  • Black 1
  • Dark brown 3
  • Brown 4

Blonde colors include:

  • Dark blonde 6
  • Blonde 7
  • Light blonde 8
  • Very light blonde 9
  • Lightest blonde 10

Starting from a brown 4 to get to a dark blonde 6 is very different from starting from a black 1 to get to a very light blonde 9.

In order to find out  how many salon visits you’ll need, you need to know that each bleach session will lift your hair three levels toward the blonde you want,  because dark pigments are more resistant.

  •  If you start from a black level 1 and you want to get to blonde 7,  you’ll need two visits to the salon.
  •  If you start from a brown 4 and you want a dark blonde 6 , you’ll need one visit to the salon.
  •  If you start from a dark brown 3 and you want lightest blonde 10 , you’ll need two or three visits to the salon to get rid of all the color of your hair and use a blonde dye.

As you can see, in this case, dyeing your hair blonde will take a long time and it’s not a change you can make in just an hour an a half. That’s especially true because you need to let three or four weeks go by between each session of bleach.

Each salon visit can take up to three hours because the hair colorist will do several treatments while you’re there: bleaching, toning and dyeing your hair an intermediate color.

These colors are in the middle of the color scale, so  you’ll need two visits to the salon to make your hair blonde because you’ll be able to lift your hair up to four levels.

The biggest problem if you want to dye your light brown or dark blonde hair is that during the bleach process, unwanted colors light orange or yellow will likely appear. And your hair colorist will need to use a toner to neutralize them.

  •  If your hair is a brown 4 or a light brown 5 , orange will appear and the hair colorist will use a blue toner.
  •  If your hair is a dark blonde 6 , orange and dark yellow tones will appear and the colorist will use a purple toner.

Since your hair is the middle of the color scale, you’ll need one or two visits to the salon that will last two and a half to three hours each.

In this case, you won’t need to bleach your hair, because your current color is already among the lightest colors on the scale.

Because of that,  dyeing your hair blonde will take an hour and a half.

What are the lightest colors on the scale?

  • Blonde 7
  • Light blonde 8
  • Very light blonde 9
  • Lightest blonde 10

Some hair colorists consider blonde 7 to be an intermediate color on the scale, but I think it belongs with the lightest colors.

The most important thing is that if you have blonde 7 hair and you want to dye it lightest blonde 10, you won’t need to bleach it. I’d recommend talking about it with your hair colorist.

Because usually you can use a blonde dye with a 30 volume developer and get great results without needing to risk your hair’s health.

If you’re hoping to get a deep ashy blonde or an intense pearl color, they can use a toner to help highlight these colors. So,  dyeing your hair blonde will take a maximum of two hours.

Conclusion

If your hair is blonde and you want to lighten it even more, that will take you about two hours at the salon.

Now, if your hair is dark or it’s intermediate on the color scale, you’ll need to spend more time at the salon and go more often. Because your hair will need to go through several treatments, including bleaching and toning.
