Why does cutting split ends help hair grow better?
Split ends, apart from being an aesthetic problem (as they make your hair look ugly and untidy), add volume to your hair.
They also increase frizz and make it harder to style your hair.
When you have split ends, you’ll have to tug at your hair to detangle it and, as a result, the hair fibers break. This further increases the amount of split ends in the different lengths of your hair.
Detangling your hair can be a nightmare, so when you cut your split ends, your hair will look healthier and you can detangle it without hassle.
Plus, by cutting your split ends you’ll be able to keep your hair and hairstyle more disciplined , achieve a more intense shine, and have many more benefits.
Debunking myths about cutting split ends
Myth 1: Trimming split ends makes hair grow faster
Hair grows, on average, between 1 and 1.5 cm per month. Of course, there are exceptions.
There are people whose hair grows 2 centimeters per month. But the average hair growth rate is around 1 centimeter per month.
Cutting your ends every month will do a lot to keep those ends from splitting and to always keep them closed.
As I said before, this will give you the possibility to style your hair more easily. But cutting your ends (split ends or not) won’t make your hair grow faster. It’s a myth!
Of course, there are natural remedies that can make your hair grow faster. Have you tried any of them?
Myth 2: Cutting split ends when the moon is in its first quarter makes your hair grow faster
The moon has a real influence on many things, such as tides, seedings, etc., but the moon has no influence on hair growth.
The most effective way to debunk this myth is to dye your hair one month in any other phase of the moon and the following month dye your hair during the moon’s first quarter (when it’s growing, or waxing).
You’ll see the root growth is the same during any time of the moon.
Therefore, you don’t need to wait for any specific moon phase to cut your split ends.
You can cut them whenever you choose.
Myth 3: Cutting split ends with a machine makes hair grow faster
No cutting tool will change the speed of your hair growth.
But it is true that certain cutting tools, if you use them incorrectly , can make your hair split faster. Which ones?
For example, if you have very fine or chemically treated hair, you should never cut it with a razor , let alone without sufficient knowledge to perform the cut.
Anyway, even if your hair is cut perfectly with a razor, scissors, or a machine, none of that will make the hair grow faster.
What should I do after cutting split ends if I want my hair to grow?
The most important thing for your hair to grow normally is maintenance.
Once you’ve trimmed the split ends, you’ll have a healthy head of hair.
From that point on, you should begin the process of keeping your entire head of hair well hydrated and nourished. Depending on the type of hair you have, you’ll need different types of nourishment and hydration.
Since virgin hair hasn’t been exposed to aggressive agents, it’s very likely that with gentle nourishment, it will recover quickly.
Apply restructuring ampoules, hydrating masks, or acid treatments to seal the hair cuticles. That way, apart from better fixing the dye color, your hair will stay hydrated and nourished for a prolonged period of time.
Your best options are keratin shock, hair botox, hair cauterization, etc.
These treatments will be extremely important to help restore your hair’s fiber and keep your ends closed.
What should I avoid if I want my hair to grow and my ends not to split?
Everything you do to keep your hair healthy will prevent split ends.
But, if you don’t accompany these moisturizing or nourishing treatments with a good quality shampoo and conditioner , all your treatments will be in vain.
Conclusion: cutting split ends helps your hair grow strong and stay healthy
As we’ve seen in this article, cutting split ends helps your hair grow.
But if cutting your ends is all you do for your hair, before long you’ll go back to having split ends again.
That’s why (this is how I finish all my articles) I advise you to make an appointment at the hair salon and organize with your hairdresser who does what: they’ll be in charge of leaving your hair impeccable and you’ll be in charge of keeping it that way.
GO FOR IT!
